Fair enough. I mean maybe I'm not just her target audience. I personally think artists like Gaga and Beyonce exude truer confidence. They don't talk about it but we know it's there.

Like I said, as a consumer, I just prefer it when it's more subdued and muted and less in-your-face.

Except that Beyoncé talks about it literally ALL the time? She even made a whole album with Jay Z where all they do is talk about how confident they are on almost every single track?

It's definitely something that minority communities feel a need to express and hear because of how oppressive systematic injustices can be. So I feel like there's a lot of education that's required to fully understand the historical roots of systemic oppression, specifically in the music industry (and how pervasive it can be) to then understand why black musicians (especially women) tend to need to affirm themselves (and their fans) with empowering messages.

Bragging is also a key staple of rap music, which is a historically predominant black genre and something that a lot of black artists grew up being able to connect with and listen to. Beyoncé and Lizzo probably listen to rap way more frequently than Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift.

Some key examples from Beyoncé's discography, across literally every single album since her 3rd one. (The first two also had similar empowerment themes, but less boastful lyrics, as they were usually more focused on love. But still):

FIRST FOUR ALBUMS

Spoiler

DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE

Nothing really in this album, it was quite tame since she was trying to make commercial music that would have massive appeal. But even there the songs are often about how she's too good for the guy, doesn't need a guy, or if she was his girlfriend his life would be better. And yet, we still got:

– "Baby let me know if you wanna roll with a Hip Hop Star. I'm a Rock Star." (Hip Hop Star)

B'DAY

Songs like Irreplaceable, Freakum Dress and Ring the Alarm are a thematic precursor to where her career would go from there.

I AM... SASHA FIERCE

– "I'm a diva... diva is a female version of a hustla" (Diva)

– "I got a big Ego... He loves my big Ego." (Ego)

4

- "Boy don't even try to touch this [...] This is how they made me, Houston Texas Baby." (Who Run the World? Girls!)

- "I think I need a barber: none of these n***** can fade me. I'm so good with this, I remind I'm so hood with this." (Who Run the World? Girls!)

- "Hope you still like me. F U - Pay me." (Who Run the World? Girls!)

BEYONCÉ

Spoiler

– "And why you think you keep my name rollin' off your tongue? Cause when you want a smash, I just write another one. I sneezed on the beat and the beat got sicker" (Yoncé)

- "I know when you were little girls you dreamt of being in my world [...] this my ****, bow down bitches." (Bow Down)

- "I woke up like this [...] Say I look so good tonight" (Flawless)

LEMONADE

Spoiler

- "Earned all this money but they'll never take the country out me" (Formation)

- "I just may be a black Bill Gates in the making" (Formation)

- "I dream it, I work hard, I grind till I own it. I twirl on them haters [...] Cause I slay, all day" (Formation)

THE CARTERS

Pretty much the whole album,  but

Spoiler

- "We livin' lavish, I get expensive fabrics, I got expensive habits" (Apeshit)

- "My great-great grandchildren already rich. That's a lotta brown children on your Forbes list." (Boss)

- "My success can't be quantified, if I gave 2 ****s about streamin' numbers would've put Lemonade up on Spotify" (Nice)

- "I ain't never seen a ceiling in my whole life" (Nice)

- "I'm so nice, I'm everybody type, god damn right, I'm so nice, Jesus Christ, I'm better than the hype, I give you life" (Nice)

- "I'm representin' for the hustlers all across the world" (713)

- "My friends are goals, your friends are foes" (Friends)

- "No need to ask, you heard about us" (Heard About Us)

THE LION KING: THE GIFT

Spoiler

- "I'm so unbothered [...] y'all be so pressed while I'm raisin' daughters" (Mood 4 Eva)

- "Why would you try me? Why would you bother? I am Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter. [...] I be like soul food, I am a whole mood." (Mood 4 Eva)

- "My power they'll never take" (My Power)

- "Here I come on my throne sitting high, follow my parade" (Black Parade)

RENAISSANCE

There's really no need to write an eight-section comment to convince me sis :air:

But tbf it's a matter of execution, not theme. I've already said in my previous comment that there's nothing wrong with exploring the same themes if the execution is different, whether it's from the same artist or between different artists.

There's a famous writing adage called show, don't tell. If you want to write about confidence, explore the nuances and emotional complexities around confidence. Don't just say it. It will sound performative, inflated and abstract. There have been many artists who don't know this and have produced sentimental lyricism without knowing it. Lizzo and Katy are two examples I've named.

I feel like you keep shifting the goalpost of your own stance because you keep getting rebutted. At first the issue was that her themes were not original. So I pointed out it was more original than love, which is what 90% of people do. Then you claimed that she shouldn't have to brag like that because others like Beyoncé don't. So I again pointed out that that was incorrect, and added some pointed remarks about systemic injustice and oppression which you interestingly completely chose to ignore. And so now it's not about what she's saying or the theme she's choosing, but the way she's saying it, and at this point there's really nothing more to say because you've decided to be a hater and so that's the end of it. :huntyga:
