Stupid Loves, Bad Romances, Love Games? If there was a market for people looking for epic-poetry style music, there would be more diversity in what people sing about. Already for anyone to sing about anything that isn't love is an achievement in itself. Also, empowerment songs is intersectional. It's not just about a song being empowering, but about its creator (and audiences) being empowered. Lizzo definitely does not represent the same type of empowerment that an artist like Taylor Swift does... I guess singing about love and sex can be done over and over again if it's done differently by different artists so why not empowerment too? but the thing is Lizzo has been doing it for multiple eras now, and so has Katy. That's why Teenage Dream and Prism worked better than Smile and 143 even if they have similar themes. The whole point of being an artist doing multiple albums is to show different dimensions to yourself. Also, when she says 'they tried to hurt my confidence but didn't make a dent' I'm pretty sure confident people wouldn't say that in real life? It's like Katy defending her dancing and popularity. Does it make her more confident or less so? Or is it actually more confident to not give fuel to the criticism like Gaga usually does because they are truly unfazed and unbothered? Does it make her more confident or less so? Or is it actually more confident to not give fuel to the criticism like Gaga usually does because they are truly unfazed and unbothered? Exactly. No offense but I feel like you're biased against her since she isn't doing anything differently from literally any other pop star out there... For example: in the case of Taylor Swift she literally managed to build an entire brand over writing love songs that pretty much all are about the same thing. Her last album was just one love song replicated 30 times + a Kim Kardashian diss track out of the blue. (I'm being bitchy here, I know there were more nuances - but honestly it was really samey across the board. ) All of Gaga's albums have been about Love pretty much. There was even a meme about how she went from wanting to play a love game to being caught in a bad romance to being in love with Judas to needing the thing that she loves to having had a perfect illusion to wanting your stupid love to being able to cure your disease, or something. In a hyper capitalistic world, when you're good at something, industry execs tend to not let you be anything else - it's easier to market something that's clear, familiar, and straightforward than it is to market something that's always changing around. In Lizzo's case, her niche is kind of similar to Meghan Trainor – but black. "Oh this is a big curvy black woman. She represents communities and audiences we don't usually tap into, let's make her sing empowerment music and also body positive music". It's not complicated, it's just marketing. Most songs tend to not be things people say in real life. Have you ever told someone "rah rah rahrahrah roma oolalala i want your bad romance" as part of a courting ritual? Probably not. Gaga also has a song where she says "You love to hate me – I'm a perfect Celebrity". Pretty sure she doesn't speak like that in real life? I've also never told anyone I "wanted their stupid love". Beyoncé has made viral moments off of her singing songs like "BOW DOWN BITCHES", "I woke up like this", "I slay, all day", "I'm too classy for this world" – I doubt she's walking around Hollywood singing these songs –– but audiences love them and people going through hard times can relate to those messages and sing them in the mirror. And ultimately, that's what music is usually for: to connect people to artists, uplift them, make them happy. So again, not sure why Lizzo is being singled out for playing the game the exact same way all your other favorite artists are. Is it because she's Black? Or is it because she's plus-sized? Or both? Whatever the reason, this type of reaction is exactly the reason why her music should exist and fills a void somewhere in the landscape. Thank you for coming to Mama Tina's Ted Talk. My comments were interested in the differences between true confidence and inflated/performative confidence. The audience absolutely understands the difference and we shouldn't patronise them by thinking they wouldn't be able to intuit them. I think you know what I'm talking about. I've actually felt the same about Taylor when she was going through the Reputation era, and also many many other artists who did a similar thing. Many of them were white and had average body size. I think you're focusing on the wrong aspect of this – she isn't necessarily singing that because she feels that way or believes that. She might be singing that because she remembers growing up and not seeing people that looked like her singing things like that, and wishing they had. Art is also about filling a void and creating work that taps into an existing audience who is not being catered to. To me, that's what music like this is about. I mean maybe I'm not just her target audience. I personally think artists like Gaga and Beyonce exude truer confidence. They don't talk about it but we know it's there. Like I said, as a consumer, I just prefer it when it's more subdued and muted and less in-your-face.
