US to begin collecting student loans in default

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Education Department will begin collection next month on student loans that are in default, including the garnishing of wages for potentially millions of borrowers, officials said Monday.

Currently, roughly 5.3 million borrowers are in default on their federal student loans.

The Trump administration ’s announcement marks an end to a period of leniency that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. No federal student loans have been referred for collection since March 2020, including those in default. Under President Joe Biden, the Education Department tried multiple times to give broad forgiveness of student loans, only to be stopped by courts.

“American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said.

Beginning May 5, the department will begin involuntary collection through the Treasury Department’s offset program, which withholds government payments — including tax refunds, federal salaries and other benefits — from people with past-due debts to the government. After a 30-day notice, the department also will begin garnishing wages for borrowers in default.

I'm not going back and forth with you people because it's a waste of time, but this is just a straight up lie.

She flat out told student protestors she wouldn't do what they were asking her to do, and then they got rounded up by police and beaten all across the country on college campuses.

She didn't lose because of college students protesting the genocide she was funding. She lost because she refused to break away from Biden, who was one of the most unpopular presidents of all time and refused to endorse even the bare minimum on Palestine. She ran on unpopular positions, which cost her the election:

Celebrating as college students get crushed under Trump and blaming them for Kamala's own loss is despicable. That's what I'm saying, and the fact that anyone's impulse is to sneer at college students who had the bravery to protest on behalf of Palestinians is completely insane.

We don't have to. However, it's pretty clear that there was a majority who were reactionaries and not looking at the bigger picture: Which candidate would be the easiest to pressure into a ceasefire.

Dude, I haven't posted in a political thread in several months because I don't care to engage with what the handful of center-right liberals who worship genocidal politicians and who still post in them have to say and what they feel "reads well" but when someone says "congrats to the college students who protested" as Kamala blew up kids in Palestine in response to a story about them being financially gutted by a dictator as if it's their fault she lost... Won't make the mistake of wasting my time again, don't worry.
