Do you know how real Black Mirror is becoming?

I started a rant about this and decided it deserved it's own thread... Are you all aware of the newest scientific breakthroughs? And how real shows like Black Mirror and Westworld are starting to become? Science fiction is starting to become science fact. Very rapidly

Does anyone remember the Miley Cyrus episode? Where they (spoilers) had her in a coma and scanned her brain and cloned her voice to extract new songs from her. Well now we have AI that can clone a voice. And look what popped into my YouTube subs just today from one of my fav science girlies

Mind reading tech is being developed by many companies right as we speak. Yes literal mind reading

They created tiny human brains in jars and have been doing all kinds of experiments on them for the past few years

And yes we're using human brain tissue as computing power now. Because of course we are... They can train these computers or 'wetware' on dopamine and they have thousands more processing speed and consume less power than any computers we've invented and can think 'creatively' which regular computers cannot

And obviously we've all had conversations with AI  and seen the newest robots like...

humanoid-robots-illustrated.jpg

But of course we have much lighter news too like these incredible, life altering advancements

So my question is: when you put advanced AI into a computer made of human brain tissue which can think creatively.. and then put that into a humanoid robot... have you basically just created a stronger, faster-thinking human? I have ruminated on this for months now and I think we are literally creating our replacements.. for better or worse

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Anticipation has always been a scifi subgenre. Although I like pure scifi, I always had a soft spot for stories that imply a direct extension in reality. The 'what if' in the future related to here and now.

I'm not denying a good fun with journeys in the great beyond but I think scifi stories taking roots in reality are more interesting. Churning up thoughts. Eye-openers...

Now it's a matter of taste too. I've been blown away by Tarkovski's Stalker for instance. A Clockwork Orange, Alien, Robocop or The Exorcist left me speechless when I saw them on release in theater...

I always used to think that movies, series and telenovelas could be actually a transcription of what it could actually turn into reality because the ideas were and are always there anyways.
We know that the plastic and visual appeals are part of a bigger picture to catch people’s attention and that’s part of the audiovisual industry which goes to the consumerism industry in general but we shouldn’t, never underestimate humans creativity. My concern is just that we are given so much intelligence however the way we are always in need to play gods in order to prove dominance and manipulation, humans are just using it in a bad way. That is dangerous and the results are out there.

I agree with all of that

You know I used to be so excited about technology and the future, but I think the past 5 years or so I've become SO jaded with the world, the people in places of power, the use of power and control for nefarious agendas, the growing wealth disparity etc. that I just can't feel excited about any of it anymore. I can just see so clearly how it will all inevitably be used for such evil. I see humanoid androids and I see how they will be used by the government to control citizen and militarised. I see brain organoids and I wonder how we are allowed to stretch ethics so thin and if there are really any limits anymore. Mind reading well.. I can't think of any positives there

I still enjoy sci-fi as a genre though. Just in smaller doses

Who am I kidding, I hardly watch any movies at all these days anyway :laughga:

They are! What a lot of people fail to realise is that technological advancements are always crafted by imagination first, and the science figures it out later. It's one of the reasons I think creative pursuits and the arts should be more respected and promoted. You can't have a scientific breakthrough without being able to think creatively and outside the box for solutions to seemingly impossible problems

I agree. All of this technology is morally neutral, it's how we use it that determines if it's 'good' or not. And we as a species aren't all inherently 'good' so it will all be tainted by our use of it. I've been saying the past few years with the rise of AI two things. 1. I naively didn't expect us to have this technology for another 10 years. and 2. we aren't ready for it. Our species needs to be at a higher level of intelligence, empathy and unification as a whole in order for this technology to produce a general 'good'. It's like we've opened Pandora's box too before we were ready and we can't put it back now. I just fear how it's going to be used given the global leaders we have right now and how strong the military presence is

Completely agree, we are not ready for any of that. And all these nasty leaders are taking advantage of it all because they know its just very convenient getting people overwhelmed with so many information while they work their pockets out… or in actually.
As we keep on continuing taking dominance rather than respect and common sense, there will be no good prognosis for humanity no matter how advanced and technologically far we go.

Nice points coming from you and nice conversation, this is refreshing.

It all goes towards my theory that we are just creating our replacements. We're almost teaching AI to be better humans than we are. I can definitely see a time, maybe in 100 years, where we've become so integrated with technology that robots naturally just take over more and more each generation until no humans remain. Because they're 'better'. Once people can upload their consciousness into a stronger metallic body that doesn't die, with a mind that works 1000x faster than their human brain, that's it. A year ago I would've laughed this off as a conspiracy theory but the more I think about it with a broader, open minded lens the more I realise it's probably true

I’m not really sure about that one tho because of global warming, unless they’re developing a really good kind of bunker or something like that where they could eventually save and preserve those pieces permanently. If by any chance humans find a way for mindset changing and finally reverse the climate catastrophes somehow then yes, that would be possible. But honestly, I can’t see us as species going forward with climate in a positive direction, especially given how retrograde and backwards we are rapidly getting.

Plus, there’s so much stuff involving power and those who’s in charge of it that we have no idea about their plans, maybe just yet - which still, could only include their circle involved in any possible surviving plan anyways.

I may come off as negative but this system we live in as humans needs a reset, I’m sorry. If there’s no hope or actual progress for growth, so yeah, the human era needs to end so this planet will be able to rebuild itself, just like previous ones.

this is highly exciting and extremely scary at the same time

I'm more excited than scared right now tbh

Any discovery or breakthrough is gonna be subject to greedy capitalists which invites corruption in leadership and representation but that fact shouldn't stop us from doing great things

The integration of grey matter into efficient computers has the potential to lead to breakthroughs on diseases of the mind, like schizophrenia or Alzheimer's

Imagine the technology becoming well known and cheap enough so that, idk, dementia could be treated with a simple surgery and implant, allowing people to stay grounded and cognesient of reality well into their 90s or 100s?

Hell, integrating actual computers into neurons in the spinal cord could cure paralysis!

Hearing aids could be implanted directly into the auditory cortex, circumventing deformed or damaged eardrums or it could even be a luxury surgery that allows you to listen to loud noise with zero risk of hearing damage

Cybernetic eyes with connections in the occipital lobe could help the blind see or you could even link it wirelessly to other networks and share what you've literally seen...

....I've played way too much Cyberpunk 2077 lmao but I wouldn't mind a future like that with a bit less dystopia to it

All this to say, I don't think any of this is something to fear as AI is still just algorithms doing equations and anything else (the future cyborg race of humans, greed, and corruption) are all inevitable anyway so why fear them?

I don't see it as a bad thing.

for example, AI is awesome, even if it steals art, art was meant to be stolen and to be shared and used by the public and not to be held hostage by a greedy egomaniac artist. even using the voices of dead people, I mean they are dead, so who cares, they have no opinion anymore, but we still deserve to enjoy music with their voice.

Why should @PartySick stop listening to new MJ music just because he's dead while we still listen to new gaga music when she remembers that she has a music career every couple of years? it's not fair. he shouldn't wait 10 years for a couple of old songs leaks, yes an official Lady Gaga ft. MJ - Shadow of a Man could be real and not that bootleg crappy fan made sh-t on youtube.

I also don't see a problem with cloning, like if your partner dies, just make a new one? why life should stop with death? we can overcome death, we can make ourselves new bodies, install our memories and consciousness back and move on with the day. just like the X-Men overcomed death in Krakoa.

If sciences let us do it, we should do it. there's no "ethical" approach, we should toss "ethics" in the garbage, they are holding us back as a society.

I don't think humanoid robots will catch on anytime soon. The human form is just not that practical and opens them up for a lot of vulnerabilities.

For example the boston dynamics dog robots can walk/run way faster and take a kick without falling over, because having four legs helps it stabilize itself. All of the Tesla robots, the alleged latest and greatest, were controlled by humans manually and not AI, so they don't even have that going for them.

A lot of the robots that we currently have aren't shaped like a person but complete their tasks at a faster speed than a person would.
