And what he meant by that was, basically: Every element heavier than hydrogen, helium or lithium, IIRC, is the product of stellar fusion. That first generation of stars eventually exploded, scattering their elements to space. And that matter sometimes came together again to form new stars, and... planets. (To be clear, this process is ongoing. I'm just talking about the heavy elements that we already find outside of stars.) Earth would not exist without the life and death of those older stars.
