Lizzo slammed after calling Britney Spears a Janet Jackson imitator

Lizzo has sparked heated backlash online after claiming Britney Spears is “doing a Janet [Jackson] impression” during a recent interview.

The “Truth Hurts” hitmaker made the remarks during an appearance on the “Sibling Rivalry” podcast. The comment quickly went viral and stirred up intense reactions across social media. 

Clips from the episode began circulating shortly after it aired, with many calling out the Grammy winner for minimizing Spears’ legacy and individuality.

Critics pointed out that while Spears has openly praised Jackson as a major influence, her sound and style have long stood on their own. 

While defending her take on why Janet Jackson deserves the “Queen of Pop” crown Lizzo said:  “Here is why I said Janet is the Queen of Pop. Britney Spears is doing a Janet impression, and she said it. Janet is her diva. There were no such things as Pop Divas before Janet. Janet was first. She was famous when Madonna was a kid watching her on television.”

Many users defended Spears, noting her decades-long career and her own influence on pop culture. Others accused Lizzo of pitting women against each other and downplaying Spears’ originality.

I'm a Janet stan but what alternate universe is she living? madonna broke out with her debut in 1983 while Control in 1986 was when janet got her big break. Both are pioneers and even Britney is too in her own right

I’d love for the ‘x artist copied x artist and is the real queen’ argument to just stop all together. They’re all inspired by each other no matter who came first. I’m sure some of the pop stars that have been around for a while are now being inspired by Billie, Doechii and Chappell, who have all said they’re being inspired by the ones who came before them.

There is no true originator other than the first humans who discovered how to sing and create instruments to be honest.

Janet was a child actress. She's probably thinking about Madonna sitting at home watching Good Times or watching her perform with her brothers as a kid

Madonna had like 6 hits and 2 major albums before Janet and many more after Janet's unfortunate decline due to being unjustly blackballed. for lizzo to say there was nothing like pop divas before Janet is just false. 

also not taking anything away from Janet's success as a child star but it really has no weight in this conversation.

I dunno about the western world, but here in Asia, Madonna was very popular and her music was highly influential.

 

and Whitney was way more popular and influential here than both of them.

Lizzo is still being introduced in articles by the first hit she had that came out close to a decade ago. She doesn’t have the staying power nor the artistic identity that Britney has. I can empathize with being partial to giving black women in the industry their flowers but Janet is no underdog and Britney has honored and acknowledged Janet throughout her career.

What I mean is when she says Madonna was a kid watching Janet perform that's legitimately possible 'cause Janet's been on TV and on the stage since she was a kid.

I will disagree with the "there's been none like her before" 'cause honestly she's always done it better than Madonna. Far, far better. Better music, better dancing, she's just better all around.

Comparing Janet and Madonna is like comparing MJ and Prince. They're too different from one another to pit them directly against each other.
