Monstermilo 4,483
girl gaga has done a lot of questionable things, shes collabed with terry richardson a rapist, R KELLY another rapist - where she said " do what u want with my body" to a man who had sex with underage girls...... remember ppl saying she did a photoshoot with blackface??? our queen isnt perfect so we shouldnt be coming for korean girls who barely spoke english at that point before they became famous. my point is, all our faves have done cancellable things, if were going to cancel one, we should cancel them all and not give a pass to ppl just cuz theyre legends. Roughhouse Dandy 11,283
Just reading back. Noticing that 1 (one) person mentioned anything about "cancelation", a handful of people basically just saying "yikes, that's not great to see", a few jokes, and then 5 pages worth of people either defending it/them exasperated at the 1 (one) person who talked about "canceling" them or wondering why it's an issue worth talking about in the first place. Just to clarify a few things here: R. Kelly's inclusion on Do What U Want out of context is in poor taste. However, DWUW is about Gaga telling the media to do what they want to her image but they'll never have her heart or mind. As for the the photoshoot with Gaga having a deep tan, if I recall correctly, it was to poke fun of the beauty standard at that time, bleach blonde hair, and crazy spray tans. Of course, out of context it looks questionable. And as for the photo at the very bottom with the people in blackface? That's false. They're not in blackface. Gaga is at a club and this was a fetish party if I recall correctly, they have brown painted on their face to represent that they're into scat. I believe this was at a German nightclub where Gaga debuted Scheisse. 。゚☁ glued up, sometimes it's too much ☁ ゚。

If you're gonna sing American artists' music you should know the culture and where that music comes from. Then you'd learn that word is used in their music as a form of reclamation which is something these ladies, as Korean pop singers, cannot do. It's appropriation at best tbh. But the fault definitely lies with whoever believes "American music is cheap and meaningless so no harm in having these singers (that we definitely aren't going to exploit ) say a slur over and over again". 🌸Flourishing and vibrant🌼

This communty man, some need to take lessons on data analysis.

Maybe one should, but most people don't. I don't know everything about british, russian, ... , any other cultures. They were not international stars back then. Also, how much do you all know about Korean culture? What can or can't you say? Kpop is popular, you should know something.

And they should be held accountable for it because it's wrong. how people defend this is beyond me.

Chromanne 1,415
As a person from Asia myself, even I used to utter the n-word when I lip sync to American rap songs when I was a teenager. We didn't pay much attention to it and didn't know the backstory behind such word since that word is commonly used by many Black artists themselves. We also don't know that deep about American history. The same can be said for Blackpink, they probably wouldn't even had been fluent in English by that time. Therefore it is very unlikely for them to know about it. They would've sang what was given to them so that the companies thought it to "cool and American". Roughhouse Dandy 11,283
Crazy that when media talks about how bad racism and that slur is, the worldwide reaction is "we get it! You're beating a dead horse. At this point it's just virtue signaling" but when something like this happens it's suddenly hyper-specific niche knowledge that no one outside of the US could possibly learn before they're at retirement age. Sounding like a flimsy excuse tbh This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

I used to be extremely obsessed with old school kpop as a kid, basically kpop (as we know it today) was built off of the Japanese idol system and American music trends in the 90s (which were r&b & hiphop at the time.) Here are some examples of the original idol Kpop:
