Lady Gaga reflects on her 2016 album, Joanne, and how it’s different from MAYHEM

I love the sound of Joanne. It's probably in my top 3. But concept-wise that album really didn't make sense and looking back at it it feels like Gaga was really trying to be taken more seriously and get approval. Which is completely understandable after ARTPOP.

In the end we got a great album imo so I'm happy with it. I just wish the concept was different

And yet Joanne feels so inauthentic to me, it feels like an attempt to be a good girl and rebrand herself to the American straights and the Christians, the whole religious aspect of the album turned me off so bad, like all the prayers and the crosses and the jesus, not for me, it feels like the album is not "hers" but Mark's and Bloodpop's album, same thing with Chromatica, it's a more a Bloodpop ft. Gaga album than Gaga ft. Bloodpop album. she kinda lost "herself" in these 2 albums. I love Chromatica, but I have so many complaints about it the more I listened to it, to the point that I barely listen to 5 songs from it right now.

Also John Wayne, the symbol of homophobia, racism, sexism, been idolized is kinda bad.

Joanne was the moment when Gaga has shifted herself from being an activist about almost any injustice, to be calculated about what she said, to keep the image of the "good girl now", it's like Angel Down was a goodbye to that Gaga.

I really really dislike this album and this era.

I have to agree but i genuinely love the way it sounds. I feel bad for liking John Wayne but it's such a bop. I wish Gaga made another rock album.

Also i liked that era cause we got so many interviews and looks. Just compare it to what we get now. But yeah, i didn't really care to listen to her talking about her dead aunt :huntyga:

I feel like Gaga is really trying to distance herself from the album. Like, she definitely got a new appreciation for ARTPOP given how many times she's mentioned it this era, but not once did she mention Joanne, aside from this video. So she definitely feels very different about it now. I just wish she would understand that the sound wasn't bad at all. It's just the concept of the album and her forcing herself to be something else at all costs

Joanne was her trying to go against the “Gaga” mode just to be rebellious and I’m so glad she’s admiring it. It’s not a good album at all and it shows.

This is such a bad take :rip:

Anyone who says Joanne sounds "inauthentic" has no idea how to digest the album nor do they understand what she's saying here :icant:

The album is literally about her journey. If anything, acknowledging that she was facing backwards while making the album and stepping farther away from who she ended up being makes that album even more genuine.

"Where do you think you're going?"

Well, there's your answer. And she's changed direction since 2016. Good for her and good for her best album

Almost anyone is a bit of a reach, no? It still had a lot of personal layers that only Gaga/Stefani would know - title track, Grigio Girls, Angel Down, Diamond Heart etc

Right @PartySick

Joanne threads piss me off 'cause I continue to realize just how little Gaga's own fans understand that album despite them having damn near ten years to think about it.

Literally none of the songs on Joanne could work for another artist. They all slot into context with each other and under her.

She was still there (sometimes)

I like this video a lot.

Btw guys its important to have in mind that the Joanne era was 9 (!!!) years ago. Its so normal she reflects on it and its the past. IMO I just feel like the world was so hard on Gaga back in time from 2012/13 and that affected her health and mental state so much the years after, even into the Joanne era. The world can be so hard against artists especially with women. Im just so happy she is in a good place and mental state today and has created one of her best albums ever.

Oh please, that was 4 pages too much reading all your personal feelings with the Joanne album. Its the "least Gaga" yet the songs are about her life and the people around her. And a few years from now, the same people will make Mayhem the butt of the joke because a new Gaga album comes along.

And to the person saying that if the sound mixing of Joanne was on par with Mayhem's sound mixing then it would sound better, suprise they are both done by the same person, Serban Ghenea. Maybe that was a Gaga choice back then to make the voice more present than the instruments or electronic sounds.

Joanne is different than her other albums and I love it just the way it is.

I think Joanne was the album that she needed to make. Joanne just unfortunately have the status of being an LG x album because when looking at her discography now, it seems to serve as a transitional album between ARTPOP and ASIB, something like what Harlequin is to MAYHEM.

Although I do agree that sonically and lyrically it may not be her best but I dont think Joanne is inauthentic. Very much the opposite because Joanne is the start of her journey back to being LADY GAGA. MAYHEM is the ending of the trilogy which started with Joanne, at least from my perspective.

It's inauthentic, try hard and her worst album to date, so I'm glad to see her finally admit it.
