and then she named the album after someone who is dead and that Gaga never met.

She never met Joanne, but Gaga always loved her. In The Fame booklet there is a poem written by Joanne. I hate this narrative that Gaga used her dead aunt to promote an album. Joanne always meant a lot to her.

I don’t think SLANDERING those albums is necessary. But assessing them under the context of which they were created in is a fair. The way she spoke about them was always different - and recent interviews kinda solidify a lot of WHY.

I think a lot of people forget she was ready to quit music after how she was treated for ARTPOP and what happened behind the scenes. Making Cheek to Cheek with Tony was the thing that kept her in. Joanne and Chromatica weren’t made from the same place as The Fame, TFM, BTW, ARTPOP. Those albums had hunger and confidence in them in way Joanne and Chromatica did not. This is reflected in the how’s  and whys of making the albums - as well as the lyrical content itself.

MAYHEM is a return to form, because there is an excitement from her, a confidence in the work, and a freedom in how the album is written. Joanne and Chromatica weren’t as heavy on the tongue in cheek writing Gaga was known for on her first 4 album - but we see that back in full force with no fear of if it will be torn apart or adored.

Joanne and Chromatica are both great albums - but they also are albums that almost feel like what she thought she *should* make rather than being what she *wanted* to make. Whether it be for business reasons or personal reasons.

I consistently listen to more songs from Joanne than any other album (DH, Joanne, MR, PI, JW, and, yes, Grigio Girls).

Is it my favorite album? No. But I go back to it more than even BTW.

I agree, both albums did their jobs.

Damn everyone is ripping into Chromatica and I'm here wondering if I like Mayhem more or not :saladga: I really enjoyed Chromatica A LOT. Alice, Babylon & Enigma are some of my all time favs. It was also her return to Dancepop. I will agree it has some filler though, while Mayhem mostly doesn't. :lolly:

When Joanne came out it was hype because 3 years since ARTPOP I was excited for another era. Perfect Illusion was disappointing to me but the first half of the album I liked and enjoyed Gaga's influence on the tracks if nothing else. I just think something wasn't quite clicking which is what a lot of people felt.

I really enjoyed Chromatica at the time because it was a nice break from the analog sounds of Joanne. It definitely brought some of that excitement back.

MAYHEM is just on another level and it has put the last two albums in a different light to me because the bar has been raised exponentially. It's what I've been truly waiting for since 2013 and it gives me that euphoria that I remember from listening to Aura for the first time.

Perfect Illusion was a complete let down for me, gosh never been so disappointed in my life. I sadly forced myself to pretend I enjoyed Joanne and it was a good album. Just like with Cheek to Cheek. But A Star Is Born came and finally what Joanne was supposed to be came to fruition. Enjoyed this one a lot. When Chromatica came out I was bored in the pandemic and Chromatica was ok but stood kinda in the limbo for me.

Judas is coming. Let the cultural baptism begin.

None of these albums helped her career, it was mainly A Star Is Born and her Jazz albums that helped because the general public saw her in a different light.

I think if Gaga released a truly good pop album soon after Joanne, Joanne would be more appreciated as an experimental era, but she went on too long not giving us good pop music.

I will say this: it baffles me that both the fans and Gaga compare in Chromatica and Mayhem in a way that she's more authentic now. Not talking about that she obviously feels much better now, but lyrically Chromatica had some truly gut wrenching dark moments

I'm confused...?

I thought it was more so 2:50, the LoveGame yell is basically the John Wayne yell?

She used the same guitar riff here as from John Wayne live performances.
