Business Insider:Lady Gaga bait-and-switched fans with her new album 'Mayhem'

Where Gaga teased "a series of gothic dreams," what actually takes shape is a woman jolting awake, the sun streaming through her windows. The vast majority of "Mayhem" is lively and melodic, undoubtedly '80s-inspired, even funky at times.

That's not to say Gaga isn't going full pop-maximalist as fans hoped she would. It's just not the limb-for-limb resurrection of "The Fame Monster" we were primed to expect.

Still, standout tracks like "Vanish Into You," "Killah," "Shadow of a Man," and "How Bad Do U Want Me" suggest influences from David Bowie, Prince, Michael Jackson, and Taylor Swift, particularly Swift's own synth-pop heel-turn "1989."

She never once said she was out rightly going back to her early Pop work only. She already told us that the album was like a shattered mirror. It’s every bit of her old music both in her professional career and before.

The album was an exercise in her going back to Pop music she loved making and wanted to make.

I mean, the album, production and vocal wise is more C2C, L4S, ASIB and Harlequin than actually LG1-6, only Abra is old Gaga, but still holds the new Gaga.

Mayhem is really not back to old self kind of album..

Come on and wrap that blade of grass around my hairy ass

She literally said she went back to making dark-pop music. Besides Disease and Abracadabra, she did not. There are countless fans on this forum, and also other pop forums, calling out the false marketing. And there is a reason for that.

She did actually very directly say that in the original press release when she announced the album.

“The album started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved”

I agree with your assessment, but I can understand why fans might think she was returning to a predominantly eurodance/industrial sound (and ofc the two pre-album singles that were originally intended for Mayhem would also appear to indicate that direction).

Disagree tbh. This album is classic pre-The Fame Gaga and doesn’t really remind me specifically of C2C, L4S, ASIB or Harlequin. I get what you’re implying about the raw and theatrical delivery, but she was doing that well before any of the albums you listed.
