There's No UK Acts On IFPI Global Charts For The First Time In 20 Years

After years of global domination, British music artists have failed to make it into the worldwide annual charts of the year’s top 10 bestselling singles or albums - for the first time in more than two decades.

No UK acts featured on either list for 2024, as published by global music industry body the IFPI.

Two years ago, UK acts held seven of the 20 entries in the end-of-year singles and albums charts.

Releases by Coldplay, Charli XCX and Dua Lipa did not make the lists - with the highest-ranked British representative being singer and producer Artemas, whose song I Like The Way You Kiss Me was the 15th most popular single of 2024.

Previously, UK acts have appeared in one, or both, of the top 10 lists every year since at least 2003.

The reduction in British stars is not just a global phenomenon. No British act held any of the top 10 most popular singles of the year in the UK in the most recent list - the first time that has happened since at least 2005.

I mean beyond Coldplay, I don't think I could name a "big" British name that released last year. And Coldplay's album didn't have any traction beyond all the preorder for presale sales in Week 1. 

Charli was big in 2024 but in a niche way as shown by her streaming numbers tbf. 

The UK isn't producing anything in any field after 14 years of Tory corruption and 9ish months of Labour ineptitude. Hardly surprising we've got no new "big" names lighting up the globe.

For the first time in over two decades, British pop stars failed to make it into the worldwide annual chart of the year’s top 10 best-selling singles or albums. 

Despite major releases from Coldplay, Dua Lipa and Charli XCX, fierce competition from the US and South Korea kept homegrown acts from the top 10.

Previously, British acts have appeared in at least one of the two top 10 lists every year since at least 2003, the BBC reports. 

Perhaps less surprising was Taylor Swift’s domination of the 2024 albums chart with her 11th record, The Tortured Poets Department, at number one.

Four out of five of the world’s biggest albums of the year were by women, with Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet at number two and three, respectively.

Jo Twist, chief executive of British record industry body the BPI, told the BBC: “British artists may have enjoyed stronger years on the international stage, which perhaps isn’t surprising given some of our biggest names were not in cycle in 2024.”

She admitted that it was becoming “much harder” to break talent in a “hyper-competitive global music economy”, while asserting that UK record companies do “an amazing job” at nurturing new talent.

Kinda surprising so I went to check my 2024 album playlist and yeah, the only British albums are from Zayn, Charli, Dua and Coldplay. Only brat had any real impact, lbh.

But still British artists are such a juggernaut in pop music, I need them back - Adele, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, MARINA, Florence + TM, Olly Alexander, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Jessie Ware.

Makes sense since Brat still has been the only Brit album and era that was big. Perhaps not as big as the US acts or Korean acts BUT that’s purely down to the fact that the biggest labels are based in the states and they make heavy promotion more US focused.

But regardless I’ve found Charli alone more artistically interesting than the crap I’ve seen charting in the states in the last 2 years lol

Yeah the issue is here probably the fact that the most interesting British acts at the moment are all on the smaller side. Had Radical Optimism lived up to expectations, it probably would've been up there, but acts like Charli, Shygirl and such are all a bit more niche.
