You know, despite the front she puts up, I actually do think Rihanna is a deeply sensitive person, and likely doesn't want to flop or whatever. I remember her talking about her famous yellow Met Gala look, and she mentioned she was actually afraid she overdid it or whatever and had some anxiety on the way there.

OT: Honestly good for her. It is pretty obvious she didn't like being overworked (she pushed out an album a year and toured them for her first 7 records), and she just wants to build a musical legacy atp, if she ever returns to it. Anti was her best album and I'm sure she wants to top it or just not release at all. 

She has hits for the ages and still a very relevant celebrity. She'll smash whenever she releases sth I think. (But I don't think she will... at least for another 2-3 years.)

Unironically I think this is one of her best possible choices. Think about it: if it "flops", then she can say "nobody expected for it to succeed, it was a passion project". If it succeeds, then good for her. It's a win win, and whatever the case, it can add to her status as something more than a pop star.

I love that she's ambitious but at some point she needs to let go of her perfectionism and just release it. It sounds like she's being way too hard on herself.

Katy could use an ounce of this probably but Rihanna needs less of this overthinking.

Excited for whatever she may release as a whole body of work. People can shade her all they want, but she pushes boundaries so a noncommercial sound from her could slay. Not to mention ANTI is better than a lot of the projects some of y'all label "pop bibles" lol

Looks like the stadium residency was just a rumour then. Doubt she'd try that after her last run of UK stadiums couldn't sell all those years ago and this has been 9 years without any new music or any hits. And the touring market is heavy right now, especially with stadiums, people's wallets are gasping for air. I'd take her statements seriously if she'd said this 5+ years ago. But she says an iteration of this every year. It's just laughable now.

What if her return is a big fat floppage like Fergie (11 years between The Dutchess & Double Dutches), Gwen Stefani (10 years between Sweet Escape & 3rd alboom), & Nelly Furtado (6 years between Loose & Spirit Indestructible) cos they waited too long on it, and people have moved on?  Even 4 years is too long, so much things happening during those period and the scene will change so much, just like what happened to Xtina. 
Younger kids definitely know her not as musician, let's just say that. 

Exactly what I've been saying. I think she's been using her successful make up brand as an excuse to not release new music as she's too busy even though Gaga, Ariana and Selena have shown that's totally possible to run a make up line, do sponsorships, act in movies and release new music and tour. Beyonce and Katy and basically every mother in the industry have also shown it's possible to still make new music during and after pregnancy. I wish her fans would realise that the more Fenty Beauty is kept successful, the more Rihanna will delay new music. It blows my mind they still reward her by buying it knowing that this is entirely the reason why she won't come back. Falling funds is the only way she'll listen. 

And yeah, she should have taken notes from the women who came before her who risked long breaks, especially after a big hit album. Culture has moved on so much since Anti came out and Rihanna either being stuck in the past or trying too hard to adapt to new trends will not go down well, especially at 37. If she puts out work that sounds no different or improved in all the time, this could have a knock-on effect for everything. She can't risk people not buying her make up because they no longer see her as cool anymore. I think that's part of the reason she liked the idea of leaving on a high. But yeah, plenty of artists have stepped up to accommodate the gap Rihanna left in the market and now young people prefer to listen to Doja Cat, Ariana, Billie, Tate McCrae, etc. who embody a lot of what Rihanna used to offer but younger, more contemporary, more relevant. Gaga wouldn't be as popular if she hadn't done anything since Joanne. I don't know why we think Rihanna's this big exception.

I wondered too. I wouldn't be surprised if she's got some degree of stage fright now after so long out the game. The sound of the crowd, the thump of the beat, the intensity of choreography may have been euphoric at the time but is now daunting. She maybe feels like she can't keep up like she used to and people will laugh at her if she's anything less than perfect. I have the feeling she changed this album so many times as just when she felt she was ready, culture shifted again and new names were breaking out and having their moment and she felt it wasn't the right time. It's also easy to forget that even before Anti, she hadn't made an album for over 3 years before that and there were 3 singles released that were meant to be in the original Anti album but never made the final cut because they weren't hitting like she hoped and the project was in production hell for a year until its eventual release in 2016. Its all amounted to her only making one album in 12 years. She's become a perfectionist further into her career, to her detriment.
