But I think my point is that “good” writing is about more than just storytelling. I mean, to write a song SO dense with hooks that doesn’t sound generic or factory slop? That’s a hard skill! She’s not Joni Mitchell in songwriting but in the field she operates in mama is about the best of the best. There’s different kinds of good songwriting is my point :) her arena has never been acoustic storytelling type songwriting. But gd if she doesn’t write a great pop hook better than anyone

honestly i think that the lyrics on thank u, next were better than many of gaga's lyrics - and that's nothing to do with acoustic storytelling. there's just only so much you can say when most of your songs revolve around just love, it's a classic problem most popstars have is that their lives become so disconnected from reality that they have nothing else to talk about. it works for taylor swift because she kind of feeds on her fan's obsessions over who is this ex or that ex, etc. but songs that aren't about love are usually what stand out most as that's when there are actual things being said (like look what you made me do, 7 rings, bury a friend, etc.)

i read something about max martin doing "musical maths" or something, where lyrics don't need to make sense they just need to sound good, and i think that's the formula gaga uses for most of her tracks tbh. again, no shade, i love her music. i just don't personally find her lyrics that interesting - that's not what i'm after when i listen to her.

Ashnikko remix actually elevates the song

Low key every remix on DOC elevates the vanilla chromatic tracks :ororomunroe: including meth from above

BOP BOP. Plastic doll is such a beautiful song imo about loneliness. About locking yourself away behind a plastic screen of emotional unavailability so people can't touch you or hurt you. But it's also about the consequences of that loneliness. When she says "Don't play with me, it just hurts me", yeah she's talking about fcukboys with an agenda. But she's also talking about the good ones, who she's incapable of connecting with, because in a headspace like that, any true act of love is misinterpreted as 'you're playing with me'. Underrated and such a touching song

If you're a REAL BOY don't play with dolls...  :triggered:

One of the most misfortunate Gaga lyricsl I'm sure that was not her intention, the ambiguous writing will always bug me in that sense.

That's not the lyric...?

It’s a bop. And it’s a crime that we didn’t get a live performance of it at TCB. She could have made something magic from that.

THIS! It's made for a stadium! The vocals would have SERVED live!

It's childish. Period

It's actually not. It's a very tongue in cheek metaphorical commentary on power dynamics within relationships and objectification of a celebrity by media/fans/lovers/etc. It's honestly one of her strongest storytelling songs she's written.

I like the Pinocchio reference and when she says “technologic”. What takes me out is the “LoOks So SaD, wHaT Is ThIs SaGAAA?”

Yeah I love the theme, everyone consuming her… I bet this theme will be further explored on MAYHEM

Thanks for the explanation... But I understood the assignment and message since the very first moment I heard It. I obviously wasn't saying it's childish because of that, but because of the lyricism and the way those lyrics were written and built through the song. When I first listened to the album and got to Plastic Doll I remember saying to myself "ok great message but such a turn off the way it was sent". Sorry, just my opinion. Joanne had way more lyricism and MAYHEM so far is extremely good in terms of it.

I know Plastic Doll ain't supposed to be a serious song but kind of a sarcastic one, but that's no excuse. I really love Chromatica btw, one of my fave albums from her, but some of y'all don't like to accept she wasn't particularly involved in so many things during that time bc of her mindset (being, at least for me, Plastic Doll one of those things)... and it shows.
