Abracadabra cinematic influences

Just came across this article on Metal Magazine drawing comparisons between the Abracadabra music video and films like Luca Guadignino's Suspiria and Gaspar Noé's Climax: https://metalmagazine.eu/post/lady-gaga-abracadabra

I don't know how intentional these references were, but it turns out that I do love these two movies (Suspiria in particular is my absolute favorite film of the past 10 years, I even have a tattoo of an occult symbol present in the film) and I thought I would share some key scenes of these films with you.

Suspiria deals with a coven of witches disguised as a dance company, and the teachers use movement and choreography to cast spells:

As for Climax, the film is about a dance company celebrating the end of a project, but someone at the party spiked the drinks and we could easily say that MAYHEM does ensue...

Did anybody here see these films?

I think the Abracadabra choreography is just deeply rooted in modern dance, basically taking inspo from the same sources as the movies and that'd why they look similar

Mother of Puppies

There were 2 scenes that reminded me of Smile 2

(the screaming & the part where all the dancers were grabbing/touching her)

To be fair, and I know it’s a cursed name on this site for many many good reasons, but half of the choreo is recycled, elevated and build on the great work Gaga and Richy established over the years. I looove where Paris is taking it with Gaga, but all these signature motives are coming from her past work (which is perfectly fine btw).

For the art style I also immediately thought Susperia and Hunger Games haha

I love Climax and Suspiria and can see the comparisons if they were inspirations for Abracadabra but they weren't really that direct like say Holy Mountain and The Color of Pomegranates for 911 but still, it's nice to have some references. Can't wait to hear more about the album, more of that Rolling Stone interview.

the more direct inspiration for the video is ballroom culture i think, Paris is burning, the whole thing is like a macabre ballroom competition between two teams, Gaga plays both the judge and the contestant, she introduces it as if it was a ball too..
