Chappell Roan's Team Member Blasted After Asking Nail Sets In Exchange Of Exposure

I actually do understand why she publicized this. It may be standard practice for top level artists/influencers to try to get things for free in exchange for “exposure”, but these celebrities can afford to pay a fair value for these services for which the artists will be compensated and also get exposure. I think it’s a crappy norm to expect free labour from people who can often least afford it by dangling free exposure. It seems particularly disappointing that Chappell recently used her Grammy platform to advocate for paying artists what they’re worth, and yet her team is trying to get away with not paying other artists that support musical artists.  Changing this norm requires people to speak out, as Chappell herself obviously does. I would bet (hope) Chappell isn’t aware of this.

I hope this doesn't start a hate train for Chappell :rip: I kinda understand her because getting paid with "exposure" is not something any worker wants to hear but I feel like this is just petty, they had an exchange, and she refused the proposal, that was the end of it.

Especially if this is standard in the industry like some commenters suggested, which honestly shouldn't be the standard because all these artists are wealthy enough to pay for their own stuff, it's ridiculous that paying with "exposure" is somehow acceptable tbh.

I respect her for spreading awareness. Artists deserve to get paid, and hopefully the habit of asking artists for free materials in return for “exposure” becomes a thing of the past.

Bonkers

Asking a big company to supply product for promo makes sense.

They're selling thousands of individual sku's.

An independent artist who is limited by hours in a day could only benefit if it allows them to jack their price up, and even then, it's kind of not worth it.

I'd crack this up to kind of clueless for Team Chappel Roan

This. It makes her look hypocritical

Hopefully she was not aware of this

to even ask for this for free is so embarrassing... like, you're representing one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now, and you can't afford to pay a small business for custom nails? gtfo. such cheap behavior, I don't care if that's ~an industry standard~ and happens often. pay people for their services

If someone who just performed at the Grammys & won a Grammy, their team communicating to me or not, asked for free nails, I would also post it in social media. Very disrespectful but they know someone is desperate enough to do it for free.

hmm well it was sent in May of 2024... 2 days before her tour it seems? So for me the situation changes... she was still a smaller artist, so I'm less critical, but still pay the craftsmen of the art you wear.

Everyone on RPDR should get their looks for free bc exposure! It'll be on Drag Race, why pay!

agreed

also like... nothing against Chappell from me, but public perception of her has had its ups and downs over the past year :toofunny: who knows if the exposure would even be beneficial. the nail lady deserves her bag if she were to provide her services

I find that people severely overestimate how much exposure one might actually get from something like this - people seldom care enough to even check who the contributing artists are, let alone find their socials and follow/buy their work... I remember falling for stuff like this when I'd submit my work for print, and mind you I got my work featured in the creme de la creme of publications that specialised in concept art and illustration - it hasn't once led to a paid opportunity.

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

That's like me not liking the salary during a job interview and then blasting the employer on social media

If the salary was $0 & you never applied for the job then yes it would be the same

Even then, she was still signed to a major label and had the whole music industry machinery behind her and ready to move, i would understand if at the time she was not signed and trying to make it out herself, but its no the case. Its just too funny to me her criticizing labels for not caring for artist income stability such as her own when she got dropped, and trying to advocate for better payment, yet she cant make sure to do the same with her own ship she commands...

bro, I guarantee her team would NEVER mention the nail artist. they might even say they were made from someone else. this happens often.

If Chapell is cancelled tomorrow for whatever reason she would have looked even further a fool of herself. she’s right. rich people can be so cheap, eww.
