Energy crisis in Transnistria ends as Transnistria accepts EU gas

Moldovan energy company Moldovagaz says it has delivered the first gas shipment to the breakaway region Transnistria after Russia halted supplies.

In the coming days, the separatists from Transnistria plan to restore heat and electricity supply. The gas bills will be paid from European Union funds. Brussels has given Moldova a special grant for this purpose. On January 29, Moldovagaz and Tiraspoltransgaz signed an agreement to supply 3 million cubic meters of natural gas to support the operation of the gas system on the left bank of the Dniester.

 

The unrecognized pro-Russian region of Transnistria faced an energy crisis after Ukraine suspended the transit of Russian gas on January 1, following the expiration of its contract with Gazprom. As a result, residents were left without heating and hot water in the middle of winter. Industrial plants were shut down, and the power grid struggled to cope with the increased demand due to the widespread use of electric heaters.
