B.C. to hurt red states in countermeasure for tariffs

B.C. Premier David Eby has announced immediate countermeasures in response to incoming U.S. tariffs, saying the province will take action to protect B.C. workers and businesses.

Speaking at a news conference Saturday, Eby criticized the tariffs as a betrayal of the long-standing relationship between Canada and the U.S. He said the province would stand firm in the face of what he called an "unprecedented attack."

As an initial response, Eby said he has directed the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch to immediately stop purchasing American liquor from Republican-led "red states" and remove the top-selling brands from public liquor store shelves.

He also directed the B.C. government and Crown corporations to prioritize Canadian goods and services in procurement decisions.

"The Americans are bigger, but if we don't stand up for ourselves, they will just keep coming back for more," he said.

This comes on the same day U.S. President Donald Trump signed executive orders confirming he will impose a 25 per cent tariff on most Canadian imports beginning Tuesday, with a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy products.

The long-promised tariffs could completely upend B.C.'s economy, with the premier previously saying the tariffs would hit harder than the 2008 financial crisis.

A government analysis released in January showed that the tariffs, if they lasted for the entirety of Trump's term until 2028, would lead to the province losing about $69 billion.

Anyway, not BC threatning, Ontario threatning to shut off electricity but the Province that hold the most power to cripple USA (Alberta) isnt interested in retaliating :rip:

I hope they shut off that electricity and it hurts the swing states the most.

I honestly feel the electricity shut off is the strongest card Canada has to play, not sure if they're not implementing it right away for that same reason? (to not lose leverage).

It's honestly wild this is a real possibility... Canada and America are very close allies since at least WW2.

What the hell is going on..

I agree, but also you'd be surprised. The alcohol culture in the US is crazy, and it conservative "bro" groups it's even crazier. I'm not saying that this will be hurtful, but it will send a shock. This is especially considering conservatives literally shot alcohol cans in response to their pro-LGBTQ+ stance.

Im not sure if the impact will be as massive as perceived. Ppl seem to be imagining those states going dark or something but thats not the case. Its still only a fraction of their overall power supply

It would probably just result in prices spiking with demand and discourage usage. Higher power prices would also hurt longer term manufacturing competitiveness over a longer period of time but it wouldnt be an immediate effect

I think the Province that can hurt the US the most badly is Alberta because they supply all the oil but Primier Danielle smith seems unwilling to do so

I also worry if stuff like that wouldnt just shoot us right back in the face anyway. If we shut off oil (or electricity for that matter), whats to stop the US from shutting off gasoline or food products to Canada? We literally desperately need those from the US

No one wins in this trade war and this will definitely hurt the USA more than Trump realizes. But lets not kid ourselves, Canada & Mexico will still suffer to a greater degree for the simple fact that the USA being so large it means trade is a smaller share of their economy (while their internal domestic economy is more self reliant). They estimate 25% tarrifs will cut Canadas GDP by 3% while hurting US only 1% to 1.5%

And Trump is all ego, even if he takes damage, just knowing he took LESS damage will make him feel like hes winning a war even tho theres no winners here

But unfortunately we do have to retaliate even though it will hurt ouurselves more than USA, otherwise if we do nothing and look weak to Trump then well really be a cake meal to him :fail:

All Americans have to see happen is a significant price surge for them to start taking to the streets. Trump got re-elected because many people perceived him to be the one to bring prices down. Canada should strategically make it so electricity gets more expensive in certain states. I am on your side LMAO. The US needs to learn a lesson.
