Orient Express coming back in Europe

The Orient Express service (Paris to Istanbul) began in 1889 and ended in 1977 due to the rise of air travel.

Nearly 50 years later, there’s good news for those looking to relive the golden age of long-distance train travel: Accor Hospitality Group, which has taken over the Orient Express brand, announced that 17 vintage Orient Express train cars dating back to the 1920s and 1930s will be hitting the rails in 2026. 

Before it became a household name thanks to Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel Murder on the Orient Express, the Orient Express — developed by the Belgian businessman Georges Nagelmackers — kicked off its inaugural service in 1883 from Paris to Vienna.

A few years later, the route was extended to Istanbul (then called Constantinople) — making it Europe’s first transcontinental express train service. It connected Western and Eastern Europe over the course of 1,700 miles, with stops in major cities such as Vienna and Budapest.

The Orient Express was popular for its lavish and glamorous accommodations, with salon, dining, and sleeping cars decked out with mahogany paneling, Spanish leather, and velvet draperies. According to Britannica, the train was “unmatched in luxuriousness and comfort” in its heyday.

Meanwhile my European a*s doesn't own a car and only travels by train and bus.  I cannot understand the idea that you need to be placed in a little metal box and that's freedom when you can be driven to different locations with little to no effort.

Is It Dangerous? Or the fact that its not a viable option as It takes too much time or cost too much for many  bus changes etc

It is dangerous and dirty.

You will find unhinged people in there, the station and the vehicles when you riding one.

People will push you into the rail tracks for no reason while you wait on your trains etc

Not to mention the left over needles, (for drugs use), that some homeless people used in there and around the stations.

Its even worse than the movies picture It😱. This could be solved with more ticket controlling?! At least for travelling inside the biggest cities there should be and investment. The usa has so many people, that could really make AN impact? Can't understand why thats not a viable investment, so sad.

It just that the governments didn't see public transport as priority. So they never really trying to make it better. Plus, the image of public transport as option only for the most impoverished citizens to get around doesn't help either. Some areas also refused to be connected by rails and/or buses cos they fear their affluent areas will be affected by it. Either by crimes or their property values will fall from it.

oh now THIS is great intercontinental traveling option! going from Paris all the way to Istanbul would be AMAZING. I'd go back to visit Europe just to do it tbh. Plus i'd be seeing parts of Eastern Europe that I have no seen and always wanted to like Romania, Bulgaria etc also to end the trip in Turkey is PERFECT! Istanbul is stunning

Our country is built around cars unfortunately. Very few walkable towns and cities and not very reliable or safe public transportation aside from air travel.

Yeah whenever I've been to the US it feels like a series of highways linking areas of drive thrus and Walmart's and stuff it's so bizzare. We did go to one town though which had an actual high street with stores on but you still had to drive to get there as there weren't any neighbourhoods nearby. I still love the US for some reason though even if it frequently baffles me
