A lovestruck French woman handed over €830,000 to a fake, AI-generated Brad Pitt who convinced her he needed the money for cancer treatment in the midst of his divorce battle with Angelina Jolie

Anne, a 53-year-old interior designer, said she believed that she and the Hollywood star had fallen in love online and would marry so she divorced her husband and then wired fraudsters all the money from the settlement.

Anne’s ordeal reportedly started in February 2023 when she created an Instagram account to share photos of her skiing holiday in the Alps.

A woman calling herself Jane Etta Pitt – the real name of Brad Pitt’s mother – then contacted her saying: “My son needs a woman like you.” The “son” in question then popped up in her messages the next day, demanding to know more about her.

He said he had sent her luxury gifts but that she would have to pay €9,000 in customs duties to receive them as his accounts were frozen because of his lawsuit with his ex-wife.

The exchanges soon took a different turn when Anne was led to believe that “Brad” was in hospital and in need of money to pay for kidney cancer treatment. She wired €60,000 to an account in Turkey.

While Anne had her doubts, she was reassured when the fake star’s “doctor” wrote to her by email and explained that her “husband” was “in a worrying state and is fighting to survive”. She said: “It cost me to do it, but I thought that I might be saving a man’s life.”

The truth only started to dawn on her when she saw reports of Pitt with his new girlfriend but even then, the scammers sent a fake news flash that dismissed the reports of his relationship and said he was going out with an unnamed “very special person”.
Then a person posing as an FBI agent contacted her saying he could get her out of the honeytrap for €5,000. Again, she wired the money.

And she was married to a millionaire wow girl I could never you best believe I wouldn't even have active socials to be contacted by randos I wouldn't even answer my own phone you stupid af

This woman could have some sort of mental illness for all u know. For example some Austic people are a lot more gualable by nature depending where they are on the spectrum

Insensitive to say when we know almost nothing about her

Were cheerleading scammers and shaming (an admitedly stupid) victim now? Where is society going :saladga:

Edit: Depending on the circumstances why she was unhappy with her husband, he may be a victim of this too

She must have been too lonely to fall for AI Brad Pitt. But, believing that Brad Pitt is not rich enough to afford $850k is too pathetic :air:

It's uncool but how does ppl fall for these fakes ? :omg:

Except if she has a special mental condition, she had her free-will, she should have been more careful but...anyway it's her life and her mistakes. I hope she will get better soon tho cause that's kinda sad... :fatcat:

Scammers are a bunch of rats :crossed:

Just for you to know, this lady tries to end her life three times since and she’s actually hospitalised for high issues with depression, her whole life is screwed.

I get it, it’s pretty stupid to think it was even possible that Brad Pitt talks with her and asks for money but hey, this lady is suffering very much right now and she’s already full of shame on a worldwide position, let’s try to stop digging her grave faster by making fun of her

I mean, yeah, but why shouldn't we also feel bad for dumb people? Empathy shouldn't make a difference between clever and dumb people. Some people aren't blessed with a lot of brain and that's kinda sad

Stories like this just make me really really sad. It is easy to victim shame victims of scammers but there are a multitude of mental factors that contribute to someone believing something like this when it clearly isn’t true.

Oh, yes! Of course. It's just surprising that someone can still fall for something like this nowadays. Especially with horrible photoshop :messga: And now we have AI with realistic results...
