Meta and Amazon scaling back DEI programs

Jan 10 (Reuters) - Facebook owner Meta Platforms and Amazon are winding down diversity programs ahead of Republican Donald Trump's return to the U.S. presidency as conservative opposition to such initiatives grows louder.

Meta is ending its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, including those for hiring, training and picking suppliers, it said in an internal memo to employees on Friday - the latest in a series of actions cheered by conservatives.

In less than two weeks, Meta has scrapped its U.S. fact-checking program, elevated prominent Republican Joel Kaplan to be its chief global affairs officer and elected Dana White, CEO of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and close friend of Trump, to its board.

Amazon is "winding down outdated programs and materials" related to representation and inclusion, aiming to complete the process by the end of 2024, it said in a December memo to employees seen by Reuters on Friday.

Conservative groups have denounced DEI programs and threatened to sue companies over them, emboldened by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2023 that struck down affirmative action in university admissions decisions.

This is exactly what the ban is about. It's the giant corporations trying to keep the monopoly on social media. America can't stand another country profiting or having popular social media than themselves. Now they get to limit what their people see, stop them from broadening their views, use American run social media to spread misinformation (now that that's allowed for some reason? Why would they roll that back unless they want to misinform people?) and control their people like puppets. It's a slippery slope once we allow the government to decide what we are and aren't allowed to see online. If they get away with this they'll try for more. And yet peopel who support this evil are the exact ones who blabber on about freedom of speech and censorship??? Make it make sense. Make ANY of it make sense. WTF is wrong with people there?

My favorite part is when the sympathizers pretend like they're exempt because, I don't know, their skin is lighter than others or they can pass for one thing and not another. The harsh and sobering truth is none of that matters. I hope they have fun being called mentally ill on social media because it's now allowed without any regulation; no one will feel sorry for them--at least I know I won't be.

P.S. not me mindlessly checking the shipping of my Amazon order between posts in this thread. I ****ing hate it here. Even I'm a god damn hypocrit as I sit here ranting about the messed up system. A system which is set up in such a way that if we want to boycott these ****ers we struggle to obtain the products we need

I wish there was an alternative to Amazon. Facebook and Instagram are absolute dogshit these days anyway and I hardly use either. It's time to actually shift from Twitter Bluesky and stop dragging our feet. The alternative is RIGHT there for that one

If y'all don't like this and want to see change, I recommend calling and writing to some of the higher ups about it. Contact information can be easily accessed with a little digging. 

It helps immensely if you cancel your memberships/accounts and cite this as your main factor in your decision. Knowing they're losing money directly because of this decision is what moves the needle without them fearing for their health or safety. 

This change is happening because the side "in power" and their ignorant supporters are loudly against it and know to take their money elsewhere. If there isn't an equal or greater call and incentive for companies to stick with progressive, commonsense policies, there's nothing keeping them from doing the wrong thing to save money/resources.
