US homelessness rises 18% in 2024

The United States saw an 18.1% increase in homelessness this year, a dramatic rise driven mostly by a lack of affordable housing as well as devastating natural disasters and a surge of migrants in several parts of the country, federal officials said Friday.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said federally required tallies taken across the country in January found that more than 770,000 people were counted as homeless — a number that misses some people and does not include those staying with friends or family because they do not have a place of their own.

That increase comes on top of a 12% increase in 2023, which HUD blamed on soaring rents and the end of pandemic assistance. The 2023 increase also was driven by people experiencing homelessness for the first time. The numbers overall represent 23 of every 10,000 people in the U.S., with Black people being overrepresented among the homeless population.

Well this increase happened in a different administration. So they need to be held accountable as well. Deflecting to other parties solves nothing.

Obviously id have prefered Kamala but juat being objective here, ive seen politicians goals on home building nearly everytime fail. I doubt shed actually get 3M more homes built

Also how much would 3M actually do for affordability anyway? Aparently in Canada we need a simmilar number by 2030 to restore affordability. The US has 9X the population, how much would 3M really do?

I don’t like Trump but as someone that lives in San Francisco I can’t blame the republicans for our homeless crisis. I can only blame the democrats that have run our state for decades.

Gee I wonder when this problem all started

Meme mostly related. As with most modern day problems, the conservative economic brainrot is at the core of the issue. The US' housing problems started in the mid-80s under the Reagan administration and have only continued to get worse from there due to the right trending further right and Democrats trending further centrist in vain attempts to seem balanced.

But please do continue blaming Democrats only, I'm sure Republicans can clean up this mess while Dems sit by powerless and leftists stage sit ins on their college lawns :vegas:

It’s not about blaming republicans or democrats. It’s about looking at the statistics that you posted, and seeing that neither party fixed it. It’s about seeing that it got worse in the current administration. The automatic thing to do on this website is immediately place the attention to blame on Trump, but so many people here can’t say - well the Biden/harris admin did NOTHING. The past few administrations haven’t helped. We can only blame ourselves for constantly putting these people in power. The people that get paid off by major cooperations, to keep the rich in good standings, while the middle class loses over and over again.

Nobody is blaming Democrats, we are blaming the entire system that both Republicans and Democrats are explicit in. You only want to complain about the homeless problem if it makes republicans look bad, and you want to make Democrats look powerless when thats not the reality. Gavin Newsome has intentionally done many horrible things in California that contributed to this problem and continues to do so.

Roughhouse Dandy

The internet is obssessed with a man who (allegedly) shot a CEO because it's obvious that the corporate upperclass is to blame for our suffering.

How are we still on donkey v. elephant?

It's late stage capitalism. We know which side has been upholding it more than the other but at the end of it all, we're talking about capitalism.

Biden is leaving the government with a rise in homelessness and Trump's rival was his VP. I fail to notice how the people are to blame for this all around disaster...

Why do you think this is? Hint: it's not because they want to "seem balanced". It's because otherwise the duopoly would be in danger.

I was homeless for a few years during the pandemic. So sad to see this trend continue, so scary to know Trump will soon be in charge of things.

If anyone ever becomes homeless, come to Portland lol
