Debate panels whether CBC news, CTV News or Power And Politcs continue to debate with analysts and increasingly it is believed if Trudeau secums to pressure to step down Crystia Freeland will in fact he the one to replace him though some believe Mark Carney is a less likely bit still real possibility

The Liberals are largely expected to loose in next election in fact they may even be 3rd place with NDP taking opposition to Conservatives

Though it is not believed a leadership change would prevent conservatives from winning, it may at least reduce the number of seats Liberals loose so they can at least be the opppsition party

An early election is expected after NDP party vowed to vote non-confidence amid pressure even though it means NDP would loose their coalition power

Extreme right about to be in power in USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Netherlands, Georgia :awkney:  and probably many other countries because at this point it's hard to follow up. And many other countries are having political crisis suddenly, I'm sorry but at this point this can't be a coincidence...

I think this is a terrible idea if they want to have ANY hope of winning like, anything. But I guess this has been brewing behind the scenes for a while and it's what's gonna happen. Not like we had an example of our neighbours doing this exact thing a few months ago with disastrous results or anything :awkney:

Anyway, I'm gonna vote for my Green MP (one of only two in Canada) and feel great about it cause he's awesome :traumatica:

The Conservative Party in Canada is similar in values to the Democrats in the US. Canadians are looking for a massive change and they want a leader that can work successfully with Trump. We are fed up with how the liberals managed immigration, housing and the economy for the past decade. The whole country has stagnated and the Canadian dollar is losing value. Calling Conservatives extreme right, at least in Canada’s case, is  insane and untrue.

The Conservative Party of Canada is closer in values to the Republicans than Democrats. The CPC also has a very MAGA like base.

This is why Canada gets called a 51st state bc why are we copying the Dems 2024 flop strategy of pushing Biden out and replacing him with an unpopular female VP?

Have a god damn primary.

I wouldnt put them on the same level tho. At least Canadas Conservatives are mostly focused on economics. They arent obsessed on hyperfocusing on trans or LGBT issues like Republicans

They may not fully support, but they arent actively wasting a bunch of energy making that their big focus

Even on immigration they have not historically been as anti immigration as US Republicans. Criticism has risen mainly because of the sheer number Trudeau let in which to be fair was a total exageration to what we could handle

But I agree they are still further right wing than US Democrats

I mean parliamentary systems don't have primaries. And with a no conf all but guaranteed to pass when parliament returns from the holiday recess the option is push out Trudeau for a caretaker candidate and potentially save a few more seats or keep Trudeau and be guaranteed a near extinction level event.

Atm the Liberals have about 4 weeks to decide which option to pick before the opposition collapses the government for an early election. And as it'll be a snap election and likely conducted on the minimum alloted time for an election there won't be any time to conduct a leadership election.

Honestly the Libs best bet is to bin Trudeau and put in a caretaker just to lose a bit of ballot box toxicity.

This. Theres no time to go thru a lengthy process to find the "ideal" candidate

They will loose election regardless but maybe they can loose LESS seats than with Trudeau

Conservatives in Canada are nothing like the Republicans in the US. Canadian Conservatives aren’t anti-lgbt, most still care about woman’s rights, and they want to keep universal healthcare and social safety nets. Sure, Conservatives in Canada are traditional but they aren’t bigots. They are conservative especially when it comes to the economy and overall fiscal policy. There might be some extreme right outliers but they are not representative of what the Conservative Party here stands for.

Right. Let's not hyperbolise.

The Conservative Party in Canada are bigots. They are taking anti-LGBT positions. And the anti-LGBT positions are designed to undermine Gillick competency which is an attack on women's rights and breaches child safeguarding principles.

In your first article, her own party members condemned her for what she said, end of story.

Trans women in women’s sports is an issue that has no clear way forward unfortunately. I can understand both sides but maybe it would be best if people competed in the sport by the biological sex they were born into? Also for washrooms, why not make a gender neutral one so everyone feels comfortable? The truth is that trans people make up less than 1% of the total Canadian population. Both the left and right using it to vilify the other side isn’t helping anyone. Most Canadians have other issues they want to tackle.

Pierre saying he doesn’t want minors to use puberty blockers is a bad thing? There is a lot of people that don’t want to see kids make such a huge life decision but that’s doesn’t mean they are homophobes.

No political party is perfect. Both the left and right have problems but people like you who call conservatives bigots is exactly why the left lost so badly in the US elections. No one wants to be called a racist, fascist or homophobe when they have legitimate concerns. The left has lost their ability to debate and talk with people they disagree with and that’s only going to hurt them.

Puberty blockers are temporary medication administered with the intention of delaying the changes caused by the biological process to a point where the young person is either mentally ready & happy to come off the meds or at an age where they can access gender affirming treatment like hormone replacement therapy.

Passing a law explicitly establishing that Gillick competancy can be suspended in certain situations is absolutely a bad thing. Because the removal of Gillick competancy is the sole reason why the main funders of anti-Trans political candidates/figures/parties/groups etc happen to be funders linked to the Religious Right & pro-life movement.

They don't care about trans kids or cis kids. They're tools to achieve a goal - which is breaking the system that allows young people who are judged to be of sound mind & intelligent enough to understand treatment and associated risks independence from their parents. Which underpins a significant amount of medical law & family law governing the treatment of young people in society.
It's the system that enables young people to take positive steps in any aspect of their healthcare irrespectively of their parents wishes - anything from a young person accessing contraceptives (which can be important for young girls dealing with difficult periods etc not just sexual activity) without parental consent to a young person consenting to a blood transfusion against the wishes of a parent/parents who wish to prevent it on religious grounds.
It's a system that enables young people to advocate for themselves in social service settings & in custody battles.

And also read the full article - the law in Alberta he's supporting is not just a puberty blocker ban, it also includes provision to ban schools & other services accessed by a young person from using alternative names &/or pronouns on the young person's request unless a parent consents. Fundamental deprivation of personal liberty.

Finally, I can say this based on my experience working with young people. Eradicating 40+ years of work to establish a system where young people are able to advocate for themselves to professionals will make it harder to detect & prevent child abuse. It is that fundamental trust level created by modern safeguarding in western nations that has created a system where young people feel able to confide concerns, problems or serious issues in the professionals that come into their life. Forcing professionals through the law to undermine that will reduce young people's trust and make them less likely to open up when in need. Which means that neglect and all forms of abuse will go back to the older way of being detected - waiting till it's so serious it's impossible to miss and the child's life is ruined and their health is at risk.

Freeland is not strong enough to win against the Conservatives. But a different Liberal candidate could.
Freeland is definitely more qualified than Pierre but much of Canada isn’t that progressive unfortunately.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

I find it unlikely anyone could. Poilievre and Conservatives are too far ahead in polls and with an election coming soon, no one is gonna turn that around in another couple months

Its about loosing less seats at this point
