I just got my Canadian friend a PSN card for Christmas and decided to splurge a bit since we've gotten so close. $100 in Canadian gift card cash cost me $70 in USD  

I don't remember what the ratio was last time I bought him a card but I know it wasn't that wide  (could absolutely be different pricing for gift cards, those things are weird, Idk, but still).

Yeah the currency is at a 5 year low rn.

 

Also currency value alone doesnt necessairily perfectly reflect strength of economy and certainly not how well average ppl are doing necessairily...

 

Back in 2002 Canadas currency hit a near all time low of $1Cad hitting low 60s USD cents. Yet Canada was still ranked #1 by the UN for Country with highest standard of living and middle class was still very solid.

 

Canadas currency can also fluctuate wildly due to natural resource comodity prices as well which at least in the short term dont really necessairily impact the economy THAT much. But commodities are a huge chunck of our equity markets and trading which can cause questionable swings at times purely because of stock market moves

 

But in this case in the 2020s the falling currency absolutely coincides with a faltering economy. Its never outright crashes or goes into recession tho. It just keeps chugging along endlessly stagnating and growing slower than population growth so income per capita, unemployment rate and wages to cost of living keep getting worse but at a rather slow pace. Death by 1000 cuts if I ever seen it in an economy

I really don’t see all these issue personally.  I had a family member in the hospital recently for a while and the care given was good and if this had happened in the States it would have come with a million dollar bill.  But here it is completely covered. 

Our government is never going to make abortion illegal, or revoke same sex marriage. Out government structure has more checks and balances built in  and even our right leaning parties are still more liberal on most social issues than American parties  

I know things are getting expensive but we do need to remember how we still have a good situation here.

I think that also depends on the hospital and region. Last year a 73 year old I knew died cuz the ambulance took over frekin 45 minutes to arrive...

 

Life expectancy also fell in Canada 3 years in a row now, the first time that has occured since WWII I believe. Its now nearly the same as Portugal and my entire life Canada was always quite ahead there too

 

A record number of Canadians also cannot find a family doctor and have to resort to walkins

 

Our healthcare has definitely deteriorated big time. And yes in the US it would have been a big bill, but I never said id prefer the US system to ours, im saying weve deteriorated big time relative to before

 

My issue isnt with our system. Its the lack of funding for that system, and an economy that after 10-15 of stagnating productivity is not only failing to grow but now has been outright shrinking per capita, thats gonna hurt our ability to fund things (like healthcare)

It’s absolutely incorrect to call Canada a state. Canada is a wholly separate country, with our own provinces which are like our versions of your states. We are not a state of the US. We simply share a border.

Oh yeah of course. But I meant the actual meaning of state, like nation state. Or the state of Germany e.g.  Pretty normal to refer to a country as a state in the rest of the world, bit odd in NA though. Pretty sure Trump is just stupid though. Either way poor choice of words from him. (Also I’m a Kiwi not American ❤️)

Ive heard ppl refer to Nations as States especially in Europe where they are under a Union

 

But i think its clear thats not the context Trump was saying it in. He clearly was making a trolling (and frankly disrespectful joke) of how were shadowing the US like a State. The 1st time was a joke one can brush off as no big deal but repeating it over and over starts to get old in a sour kind of way
