After the two men shook hands, Trump said that while “politics is tough,” it’s “a nice world today.” He echoed Biden’s hopes for “a transition that is so smooth that it will be as smooth as it can get.” The two leaders appeared to joke to each other about the ensuing caucophony of questions shouted at them by reporters in the room, but neither responded. They conceded the results, offered support for the President-elect, and promised a peaceful transition. That is the bare minimum we should expect from our leaders, and it is why the events of January 2021 alone should have disqualified Trump from ever running again. After all of the verbal attacks they dish out when campaigning, to just smile and shake hands after all that feels…strange. Like it was all just for show.
