California prepares to fund legal battles against Trump policies

Launching his first salvo less than 36 hours after former President Trump was again elected to the White House, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday convened a special session of the state Legislature to increase legal funding to defend civil rights, climate change, access to abortion, disaster funding and other California policies from a conservative federal agenda before the inauguration in January.

Newsom’s preemptive strike signals the return of the hostile relationship between Democratic-controlled California and the Trump administration that was a hallmark of the Republican’s first term.

The new special session provides an early look at Newsom’s plan to wage an aggressive and highly visible campaign to shield California from the Trump White House while leading Democrats in the culture wars against the Republican Party.

Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta and Newsom’s office also reviewed more than 100 lawsuits California filed against the federal government during Trump’s first administration to pinpoint potential vulnerabilities for the state and map out the president-elect’s agenda.

Bonta called a news conference for Thursday morning to “discuss implications for California and preparations for a second Trump Administration” — another sign that the state’s top Democrats are preparing for legal battle.

The governor is asking lawmakers to provide additional funding to the California Department of Justice and other agencies in his administration to immediately file lawsuits and defend against litigation from and against the Trump administration.

For California, it can slow down Trump’s agenda rollout. Just how conservatives slow down Democratic plans with the legal system, the same can be done to Republicans.

Better than nothing I guess. And every state should do this too, America seems to have no idea about what's coming, it's going to end very badly.

Can't Biden do anything though to try and protect a bit of the country? So much is at stake he should be doing stuff non-stop until Trumpists take power forever

He should step down and make Kamala president for a few weeks. Even just for the sole purpose of her being 47 since there’s merch with “45 & 47.” And so she can get her own animatronic at The Hall of Presidents at the Magic Kingdom.

He can but it’ll set a bad example (as if Trump would care). Trump is going full dictator mode when he takes office.

Washington’s newly elected governor was an attorney general that sued his administration dozens of times. He already looked through Project 2025 months ago and has identified routes Trump is most likely to use to set his agenda in motion. It’s tempting to doom, but there are intelligent people in power that will try to slow him down. It’s not a cure-all, but even speed bumps can help us get through the next four years.

This is going to be a fight for our lives, rights and progress. We should be thanking California for stepping up during these times, hopefully other blue states will do their part. Sitting down and letting republicans destroy us isn’t a choice we can make. It’s do or die.

New York has also had its governor come out and say she'll fight, but I'd like to see solid plans she has and to see real preparation start to be made now.

It’s only a matter of time before California separates itself federally and becomes independent

The other states would never let it.
