I feel like there are more intelligent ways of subverting expectations though. If Phillips really wanted to be chaotic, he could've done so while still making a good movie...Otherwise, it's just a waste of everyone's time and money. And for what? Because you felt so self-important as to say "f*ck you" to the audience? Sometimes it's not all about you.

That is definitely not praise, and I think he's giving Todd Phillips more credit than he deserves . I do agree that Todd intentionally antagonized the first film's fanbase, with this sequel. But I also believe he legitimately tried to make a good film, and was by no means "just trolling". 

He very much expected for this film to be positively received, although by a different audience. It just didn't happen, lol.

I get that and I respect that but I also feel like it’s not okay to do that when other people are involved, like the actors who’s reputation is now affected. His trolling has colateral victims.

I’m not entirely sure I respect it and I don’t really agree with Tarantino’s assessment lmao. If you’re gonna troll, at least make a good movie

I mean he's definitely saying "Todd trolled the audience" but I'm missing the part where he's really laying out whether he respects that or not. Maybe I need to hear the audio of the quote to get the tone.

I mean, saying Todd’s approach aligns with the spirit of the Joker feels like an endorsement of the approach as it relates to the material. Not to mention that Tarantino is probably not a huge fan of the Marvel/DC cinematic universe and the way that it and the moneyed interests behind it have monopolized blockbuster cinema, so I’d imagine he probably respects someone disrupting that trend.
