They are not mutually exclusive.

Tell that to the indie acts who get nowhere on the charts despite putting out better music than Morgan Wallen.

What is art, quality music, to you?

Isn't good, quality music worth paying for?  Isn't commercial success a reflection of that?

I could have used lots of words but by quality I was just refering to everybody liking the song.

And that correlation... Don't go there, there's infinite ammount of trash songs that are commercially successful

I'm not saying every commercial success is quality, I'm just saying they have overlap :traumatica:

Like the difference between critically acclaimed movies and commercially successful ones?  Perhaps quality is in the eye of the beholder and who's willing to sponsor the endeavor?

Don't overanalyse this, it was just "do you prefer to like the song or that it is commercially siccessful?"

It's not a philosophical post :laughga:

I can't believe this is even a question

Well, there's people voting for the second option, so yeah :enigma:

Mr S

While I'd love both, it's quality > commercial performance

Unfortunately I find Disease a bit of a letdown. It's not bad, but not great either.

I was not here for Applause yet. OMG I think I would have gone under depression if that was way worst:ladyhaha:

It was infinitely worse :traumatica:. To the point I left the site for years, cause it was actively ruining the experience for me.

For me personally the worst case was "Venus". It was rumored to be the second single, and everyone was excited because the song was described by journalists as "a hit", and "similar to Bad Romance".

Which it is, Venus is very much on the same vein as Poker Face, Bad Romance and Judas. Musically wise, it's on that vecinity. But when the song leaked, everyone had a meltdown because the song was "too weird" for radio, and they were upset because it wasn't going to be the #1 hit they wanted it to be :bear:. I was so happy because I loved the song, but I had to deal with the negativity of little managers, angry because it wasn't safe enough for radio, and I was like "these bitches are so lame" :madge:.

It was such a toxic place to be in, as a Lady GaGa fan. But now? bestie, this is paradise :brat:

It's so nice in here compared to her previous eras, it's crazy :laughga:. I think everyone is mostly just enjoying the music.

Joker 2 was the biggest flop of her career, and the atmosphere in here was still quite pisitive. This forum changed for the better over the years, IMO.

I just want to be in love with the music. If it becomes a commercial success, that's just the cherry on top.

Even mainstream media was actively participating on the negativity. Glee, which was a popular TV Show at the time, had a full episode dedicated to the "Applause" vs "Roar" theme, and had interviews with the main cast, asking them whether they preferred GaGa or Katy :sis: (and most said Katy :madge:).

It was very difficult to engage with the online community, AND enjoy the music. The narrative around her was too negative.

But now it's honestly super nice, at least in comparison :laughga:
