Comparisons are lazy, i acknowledge, but it's where my mind goes when listening to Disease. I love NIN but I don’t get how people keep saying this is like an NIN song. Disease is very industrial inspired, but I do not get NIN from it.

Music she grew up listening to and that had an influence on her artistry 2
RichAssPiss 4,697
Disease is nothing like TFM or BTW. Superficially, it has some adjective overlap like "dark pop" but it's nothing like the 80s arena rock/European techno hybrid of BTW. It's missing most of her past signatures. It's pretty flat and linear without the syllable switching, the wordplay, the chanting. It's honestly like early 2000s nu-metal does dancefloor.

I don’t think it’s sounds like a NIN track. Closer is my favorite NIN track and I didn’t immediately think and still don’t think Disease sounded like it. Even with the example someone else provided at the outro, i think that just seems like a stretch. Personally Disease sounds like a Gesaffelstein song, and even more along the lines of electro-industrial ala KMFDM. Perhaps I'm just so glad Lady Gaga is incorporating industrial sounds in her pop music again, it had me thinking NIN, but you may be right about it sounding more like KMFDM, I can hear the resemblance. So would you say her industrial sounds have more of a German influence? Electro-industrial is a sub-genre of industrial, which is a mix of rock influences and electronic music, so perhaps we're seeing different pieces of the same puzzle. You mentioned Gesaffelstein. Which tracks do you find the most similar to Disease? I still think her voice does sound like Amy Lee a bit. 🖤“Thoughts are the shadows of our feelings -- always darker, emptier and simpler.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche
