Canada Agressively Reverses Immigration Plan... Population To Decline Next 2 Years

Canada has been taking in over 1.1M immigrants a year over last 2-3 years resulting of growth rates of 3% to 4%, by far the biggest in developed world not seen since baby boom era in 50s and 60s and currently only matched by some Nations in Africa

 

After heavy criticism that uncontrolled population boom resulted in worsening housing crisis, healthcare strains and rising unemployment the Government finally caved in, in a rather agressive reversal

 

Direct Permanent Resident immigration targets will only drop 20% from 500k annually to 395k annually

 

However the bulk of the drop will come from temporary workers and students (who often become permanent residents as well). The agressive decline in this group is expected to result in more visas expiring than new ones being issues resulting in significant drops in this group

 

As a result, Canadas explosive near 4% annual population growth is expected to reverse into a slight negative population decline of 0.2% over the next 2 years

 

After the temporary residents and students drop off from rollback effect, long term population growth should resume to a more normal long term average of 0.7% to 0.8% starting in 2027 if the near 400K annual targets are maintained

Im personally very pro immigration overall but even I started to not support their immigration policy as I felt it started to really exagerate it

We were already struggling with housing especially before pandemic with population growth of roughly 1% and 300,000 annual immigrants

 

Then suddenly we take in 1.1M to 1.2M and they did not make any plans to building more housing etc. What did they expect was gonna happen?

 

Canada is probably one of the few Countries in the entire world that had general unanamous support for immigration across all political spectrum. Whether left, centre or right wing most ppl supported immigration and all 3 main parties did. It wasnt really a political discussion here

 

For the first time in a really long time, enough ppl have turned sour against immigration in this Country to make it a pretty big political topic which it usually isnt

 

Fortunately many opposed are still not necessairily against immigration overall or xenophobic, they just feel the numbers are too high... but unfortunately it did trigger a few xenophobic anti immigration voices to grow louder as well, that damage may be permanent

I think it’s a good thing, but the horse is already out of the barn. Our housing costs won’t miraculously go down because of this. The lack of policy foresight to ramp up these levels the last 9 years when we did not have the housing to sustain it is wild to me. @Economycan tag me in your posts from now on? Thats unfortunate

 

Despite the fact i feel a cut back is very necessairy, i know on the individual level it screws a lot of people over that made plans based on recent policies that were way more open

Oh yeah, we need another 3 million housing units to restore affordability and at least 1.4 million housing units just to hit the G7 average of housing to population ratio (and its not like most of the G7 is affordable either so the fact were so much worse still is terrifying)

 

So i agree housing wont miraculously turn cheap especially since we have a hard time building efficiently here

 

But it may at the very least slow down price gains and especially rental hikes

 

Those stories of 20 students in a house with some sleeping in kitchen floor... absolutely terrifying and disgusting

 

 (and my city Bramlton is one of the very worst for stories like that cuz were heavy on student immigration)

@Economy you are legally required to also @ mention me , lol, I mean, without Québec, what would Canada be...? Canada has no justification of existing as a nation if  it does not pay equalization payments regularly to Q

 

Personally, I cannot imagine that Canada's population goes down.... that would be... sensational.. a wonder?? very unusual

And yes, Quebec could be a loophole but even so... temporary residents surged so much, i dont think forecast  population decline from expiring visas is as farfetched as it sounds

 

Weve never slammed the brakes on immigration so fast before and birth rates are at an alltime low of 1.2 children per woman. 

 

That said we will see. A decline of 0.2% is very tiny and margin for error in forecasts could be bigger than that

that would be truly sensational. I really think the plan will fail because Canada is "made to" have population growth, though factually speaking, it can change it. But I just don't see it... there is a whole capitalism-demand industry crying for more population.
