Applause was not a flop. She was coming from a huge BTW era so anything that didn't debut at number 1 from her was considered a flop. But in the end Applause spent more time in the top 10 then Born This Way song

Applause was a radio darling, that’s why it spent so long in the top 10. No other song after Applause came close to the radio AI it had. Let’s hope that a song from LG7 does great on radio like Applause did!

Tbf it didn't help that the singles roll out for ARTPOP was messy as hell. That was the real killer, the flip flopping and the lack of music videos etc killed the pre-album hype.

Largely due to Judas. People shifted attention from the first single to the second, and without streaming this spelled a disaster. The Edge of Glory being the third single only a month later made things worse.

Also, every day I think about how if DWUW had an unproblematic feature artist (or just solo tbh) and a killer video ready to go it could’ve been one of her biggest ever. It’s such a smash. Shame that that roll-out was so messy, Troy has so much to answer for.
