Just buckle up, keep your hands inside the vehicle, and just wait out the next couple of weeks - they’ll be rough lol Love this take. It's one of those things that is what it is. It's not being received well. So what? That's the life of an artist. Regardless, it's an iconic era. We have LG7 which is going to be the greatest Gaga record ever.
Head Empty 24,255
Remember that most big actors have big flops in their filmography. Usually it doesn't stick the way that a flop album does for popstars. A film is rarely tied to the reputation of an actor, especially if the actor has proven to deliver quality work. Meryl Streep has tons of flops to her name. Heck, Suicide Squad was roasted to hell and back and people still love Margot Robbie. Sure, stan Twitter will be insufferable, but that's nothing new Happiness will never last, darkness comes to kick your ass... ᵃˢˢ 🕺 6

4SeasonsInADay 48
Just saw it today. I'll try and avoid spoilers. I liked it, didn't love it. Where it was sitting before the pure hatred kicked-in in most reviews as a 3/5 or 60% kinda film tracked with how i'd feel about it. Very much a one-two punch with the first film. Where the first film ended on the promise of something more and this is a definitive downbeat end. Which is why I can see most people walking away with a more negative experience this time. What we all know now it is definitely not the film many were hoping for when we originally heard of a Joker & Harley Quinn musical. Or even after seeing the initial trailers. Gaga's amazing in it, for what's she's asked to do. I know there's some hopes that there's a Gaga-cut somewhere but this was a film with a singular focus on the perceived duality of Arthur Fleck/Joker. There was never a Lead role for her character that has been left on the cutting room floor. Which is a shame really, and has me wondering what attracted her to the role? Probably a combination of things. The money, the character work that she clearly did do, working opposite Joaquin, and being able to blend her loves of music & acting again. Overall untapped potential. I look forward to seeing what Gaga adds to her filmography next.
LateToCult 39,636
What if we submit a couple of bad reviews to make the popcornmeter match the tomatometer
Knife 6,606
I saw it with my coworkers today and we all agreed: the movie was not good, but Gaga's performance was NOT the worst part of it by any stretch. There's only so much Gaga's charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent can do for a bad script. I really loved Gaga's intensity in the final scene she has with Joker.
Flawless 2,211
Never even in my most pessimistic thoughts I would imagine this movie would be this fiasco in terms of reviews and reception. Gonna watch this weekend but I hope we move on from this Joker era ASAP the scars on my mind are on replay.
SpadesToStart 2,526
In retrospect, I’m so glad she gave us Harlequin! It’s gonna be a bright spot in all the negativity 5
CoastalMonster 82
I saw the film last night. I feel disappointed overall. Gaga and Joaquin were amazing, per usual, but the film felt disjointed. What hurts the most is what this film could’ve been: a wild ride into their relationship and its effect on Gotham. I bet seeing the scenes that were cut would help make this film feel more cohesive. Still, we got Harlequin from this short-lived era, so it’s been worth it! "I'm just a rockstar"
gagzus 14,463
Just got back from my screening and honestly it was superb in my opinion, I’ll stick a little review below if anyone who’s seen it or wants some info and thoughts about it before seeing it. Spoiler The cinematography was beautiful, as was the soundtrack, the dream sequences were good my fave was the Sonny & Cher show style one Gaga looked beautiful in that segment and her acting throughout was great. Joaquin was superb like wow holy sh*t, he took me on a whirlwind of emotions from anger, humour outs to down right depressing. The ending of the film made me cry and the use of the song The Joker is really fitting for the film especially “the joker is me” when you watch it and realise it’s all a commentary on society’s obsession with obsession itself. The ending being linked to comic book lore is also great. Gaga’a acting in this was amazing, but she’s definitely a Supporting Actress not a Lead. The scenes they cut of her honestly were understandable because they added nothing to the story. The That’s Entertainment segment they cut also wouldn’t have made sense because of Lee’s emotions in the scene, the sudden switch up to madness would’ve felt a bit jarring imo. I think a lot of the criticism for the film stems from the fact it doesn’t have a “happy ending”, it doesn’t show Lee and Joker go off into the sunset, it doesn’t show some “villain” getting got. It’s just depressing but very honest and real I feel. As someone with terrible bouts of mental health it feels a bit close to home in a lot of sense. Gaga was great but Joaquin really was the star and he was definitely my favourite even more so than Gaga actually. The dream sequences made me wanna see Gaga on Broadway or in a traditional glossy musical movie. My only critique really was there could’ve been an extra 40 minutes added in I think to flesh some bits out more. I also think Gaga needs to quit with the Botox in her forehead because it limits her facial range. That aside I’d say it’s a solid 9/10 for me. 4 1
LastNight 5,678
Just got back and I loved it!!!! Literally on the edge of my seat at one point. Their acting is excellent, the cinematography is stunning and the set pieces for the performances are beautiful. The first movie is a character study and this very much follows up on that. The trailer sells it as a blockbuster, but it's not that and neither is the original. If the first movie is a look at how the mentally ill and impoverished are abandoned by society, I'd say this one is a look at how they're exploited - here it's for petty amusement or news cycle entertainment. As I reflect on it more I think that in both movies they've presented some complex ideas around victimhood, the cycle of abuse at different scales and our response to that. There is also definitely a meta point being made with Harley's interest in him and the audience's response to the first film. It's not fully developed, I agree, but it's there and it's really interesting to think about. Yes, the music integration is clunky and heavy-handed at times. They could've done less of it simply because they didn't fully set up their bonding over music. It didn't have a strong foundation to justify them singing to each other all the time. The fantasy sequences were incredible though, and Joker performing The Joker was excellent. Gaga was of course spectacular in all her musical appearances. Speaking of Gaga; she is fantastic in it. Her most natural acting yet, and the first time I've been able to completely lose my recognition of her in a performance. At first, I didn't get why people were saying she was under-utilised - I felt that she was just leaving us wanting more. As it went on I understood. Nothing to do with Gaga though - she's brilliant throughout and particularly in her earlier scenes; I was actually taken aback. Spoiler I felt like we needed to understand Harley's motivation more. Why was she fascinated by him? Why did she really lie about her background? Why did his being the Joker mean so much to her? I truly thought she was going to reveal that he murdered someone she loved and she wanted revenge. That she was toying with him the whole time, but in a different way than we thought. Even when the other inmate killed him I was expecting Harley to be behind it all. If the movie ended with her murdering him instead and then the cut performance of That's Entertainment happened as police surrounded her, it would've been a knockout! It would've been a much more fully realised commentary on the consumption of crime and violence for entertainment. If I were to counter-argue that critique I would say that that might've been too obvious and these movies aren't about that kind of storyline pay-off. Having Joker's death be shocking but also kind of anti-climatic is maybe the point. It highlighted the senselessness of it all, the pitiful state of his life and the cyclical nature of abuse and violence. Side note: I was SHOOK when the explosion happened. That's when I was on the edge of my seat. Overall it's a brilliant watch. It's clearly got people talking. I, for one, have come away with a lot on my mind and a tonne of questions. I think that's what they want. I think they're probably thrilled that it's divisive. Also, watch the original first if you haven't because it prepares you for the overall tone of the film, which seems like it might've been a surprise for people.
HIM820 1,748
Grace Randolph thinks Gaga should take a long break from acting after this because unfortunately it will be hard for her to get another big movie unless she produces and raises the money herself. Geez. wtf 6
