Joaquin and Todd both discussed wanting Joaquin’s wife as Lee three years ago when it was announced that Gaga being in the movie was in a thing. He was because he was half owner of the production company with Bradley that produced ASIB. Just like Bradley was credited as a producer for the first Joker. They dissolved their production company in 2020-21 and now are no longer credited in each others work. Maestro was in development before they dissolved but I’m not sure how Todd is credited for that film Forgive me for quoting you from a million pages ago, I’ve been catching up on this entire thread I was so curious about Todd & Bradley’s partnership and didn’t know it dissolved right before Maestro & FAD! You’re saying they had a credit on each other’s films (ASIB & Joker) but weren’t really involved? That’s so weird. Do you have some articles about this? I always assumed Bradley suggested Gaga for FAD but seems he wasn’t involved in the sequel at all. Until now I was hoping Bradley would show up at one of the premieres like Gaga did at Maestro’s LA premiere Edited October 3 by MEM
lilboyblue 3,750
So... I finally watched Joker: FAD and I enjoyed it a lot!!! And I thought subconsciously I would be predisposed to not liking it having the glum of GGD hovering over me. LOL IT'S TRUE Gaga IS SPECTACULAR AS LEE! HER RANGE OMG. Her character was so enigmatic and she really was the device that moved the story along. Although it isn't her story, she was still central to the film, I guess that's why the confusion if she's lead or not. I was afraid they won't be able to tie up her character in the end, but it was nicely punctuated. I really think she could sneak in some nominations as supporting actress. But who cares, she was amazing! I was crying like 20 minutes in. Why do I relate to Joker so much? And the musical sequences really, surprisingly, just worked. I WAS LIVING. And um, yeah... they weren't lying — it's NOT a musical. Haha! Might watch it again! Edited October 3 by lilboyblue 2
Panchecco 17,386
I watched the movie yesterday and my expectations were very high and the movie wasn't able to deliver. It had the potential to become truly amazing with the musical aspect but the way the musical scenes are edited in the movie doesn't work at all. this is my spoiler review about the movie: Spoiler One of the main questions in the movie is wether Arthur and Joker are two different entities and his trial is clearly inspired by real life court cases were serial killers become the obsession of fanatics or groupies. Harley has a very secondary role in the movie and feels more like a vision than a fully fledged character but Gaga is truly a scene stealer and the highlight of the whole movie. I think Harley could be interpreted as a representation of the public, the audience. As Arthur actually accepts and declares in front of the court that indeed “there is no joker, it’s just arthur fleck” a mentally ill, abused, brutally tortured and miserable man, Lee decides to leave him behind, because by denying his Joker identity he is no longer an icon or a symbol or simply worth her time. Arthur is just a broken weak man. It feels that Joker creates Harley, or at least a version of her, to try and find a way out of his tragic life “for once in my life, I have someone who needs me”, “we’re gonna build a mountain” but it’s just a fantasy that will never come true as even his version of her eventually hurts him. I think one of the most noticeable problem is that despite the musical scenes are truly stunning they seem to be way too disconnected with the overall flow of the movie and they are not as explosive as they could have been. They clearly appear as visions and they kinda break the rythm of the movie. If they were more interconnected with actual events it would have felt more interesting and impactful. Also they pretty much feel like Arthur’s visions as Harley doesn’t really seem phisically present as they happen. The movie title might be misleading on purpose as Harley herself feels part of Joker’s madness rather than both of them sharing the same especially since she tries to be a reflection of him throught the movie. The endind is the part I dislike the most because like the first one kinda cheapens the movie and makes it feel more comic-bookey than it needs to be. After watching it one time it is unclear to me if the whole movie or most of it was a big fantasy sequence that is supposed to reach its climax in the end. As Joker dies stabbed by another inmate, that was kinda obnoxiously featured in many Arkham scenes for apparently no reason for most of the movie up until the very end, we cut back to the Joker and Harley show were we previously left it. In the fantasy Joker sings while bleeding out after Harley shot him, and in the reality the camera focuses on Arthur as he dies “for the camera” and out of focus in the background the inmate cuts a smile in his mouth like Heath Ledger and laughs as he is revealed to be the actual Joker of this universe. So when Harley said “we’re gonna give the people what they want” she was actually talking about Joker’s death, in front of the public as indeed that was what the public wanted for him. Overall I think it was a bold movie with very cool ideas, superb acting but it lacked a stronger structure and it could have been even more trippy and chaotic. I honestly feel Gaga made Harlequin because she had so much more to offer as Lee and I’m so proud and happy that she did. I’m very mad thate the elevator scene is not there and the staircase scene where she sings That’s Entertainment is cut short. That should have been the showstopper. 1
lilboyblue 3,750
I would say 100% don't go in thinking it's a musical. They've been telling us but no one would listen! It's NOT supposed to be a musical.
MEM 2,941
Still need 5-7 business days to process this but I think the film’s main issue was commitment. The musical moments should’ve been more bold, the insight into mental health should’ve been more rich, the relationship between Joker & Harley should’ve been more fleshed out. It’s like they did everything at 60% to try and please everyone but I would’ve preferred if it was tailored more to a specific audience. That said, I did enjoy it. But it had a lot more potential! Until now I was hoping Bradley would show up at one of the premieres like Gaga did at Maestro’s LA premiere I read this article a bit ago where Todd and Joaquin were asked about the process. There it says Todd and Scott Silver decided they wanted the musical elements and then decided to bring Gaga in because Todd knew her from ASIB: "Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver came up with an idea of following Arthur in a new story that would lean into the music the sadsack character has heard as the soundtrack to his life." ... How did you settle on Lady Gaga? Phillips: It just felt like we should find an actress that brings music with them. That’s the best way to describe it … We thought if we could get her, it would be an interesting duo … I kind of knew her because I was a producer on A Star is Born with Bradley (Cooper). https://torontosun.com/entertainment/movies/todd-phillips-and-joaquin-phoenix-talk-joker-folie-a-deux-and-working-with-lady-Gaga

I don’t know if that’s something that’s normally done or not. It is. Margot Robbie signed to play Harley in Suicide Squad without a script. David Ayer only described some scenes to her on Skype

Elyssar Farmer 63
Can this hurt the lead single ? I am sure she delivered an amazing performance but I saw some audience reviews blaming her for the musical aspect (so stupid lol). I hope it doesn't affect her public image that much.
