I can't make a Top 3, so here goes a Top 4

The Joker

Folie à Deux

That's  Entertainment

Happy Mistake (which just grew on me today after the live performance)

The lyrics and meaning of happy mistake are beautiful but I don't Stan for it like 99% of fans!! Musically it's not my fave but it might grow on me!

I have no idea how this album is shaping up to be one of my most played albums of the year, but it is :bradley: I’m thoroughly impressed

I was away when this was announced and got released so I was experiencing it on the go and am fully appreciating it now. My ultimate favourites are The Joker, Happy Mistake, Oh When The Saints and If My Friends Could See Me Now.  It's crazy that The Joker is from a 1964 musical, it was really ahead of its time, clearly. The way she transforms it into a punky rock song is so cool. Her voice sounds amazing and it really is such a high quality project, even on the songs I'm not as keen on, and there aren't many of those. I don't get the middling critic reviews, they've always been weirdly meh about her non-studio albums apart from ASIB. I don't get it as she always choose songs that are widely beloved and sings them well, so why the lukewarm reviews? I hope the Grammys give this at least one award, it deserves it.

Does anyone have the first week sales/chart position of the album?

Guess they would rather have another souless pop record with no real direction? If her heart is not in it, its going to feel lackluster, you can really tell when the artist doesnt want to do it.

this sounds like a description of a recent disappointing album we all heard :koons:

Happy Mistake has really been growing on me. It finally gives me a bit of closure about the ARTPOP mess, because it feels very reflective of that era ("strung out girl", struggles with identity, and reflection on the themes of Applause) :emma: It sort of feels like an epilogue to that phase of her career in a sense

If you read my post, you'll understand that I'm attacking the ones who are forcing to like something they don't like. I know it can click for a lot of people and be exactly what they enjoy and want, that's fine. What gets under my skin is the people (I was one of them) that do not care about jazz in the slightest and still forced themselves to like Cheek to Cheek because its their favorite artist. All I'm trying to say is that its ok to not like something. You don't have to enjoy all the flavors of your favorite chocolate brand, and you don't have to enjoy all the albums being released.

I can only speak for myself, but I am not forcing anything.  It's the jazz songs on Harlequin that I love, and Cheek to Cheek and Love for Sale are among my favorite albums by any artist.  I know it's an unpopular opinion.  I attend more jazz concerts than any other genre.

I live outside the space time continuum.

Didn't really pay much attention to it until I got curious today, I searched for the original lyrics of the cover songs she has writing credits for, and holy sh** the lyrics they added lowkey slayed?

They related the songs a lot to the world of Joker and Harley. I love the album even more now.

One of the best bodies of work she has done.

"Good Morning", for example, is a song about enjoying your time so much with someone you end up staying up late until morning. It's a peppy love song. On Harlequin, they almost completely turned the song around lyrically to make it a song about life in Arkham.

These are original lyrics If I'm right: (I've google searched and no previous version with these words exist)

[Verse 2]
When the inmates began to sleep
The stars were shining bright
Now the warden's on his way
It's too late to say goodnight

Also...

[Chorus 3]
Good morning, good morning
Bang-bang, you're black and blue
Good morning, good morning to you

In the morning, in the morning
You're back bеhind the gate, good morning
Good morning to you

The music being so bright and happy, while the lyrics talk of something grim is genius. It feels insane!

Plus, the first verse of the song a capella is a great opener to the album because it already introduces Lee's obsession with Joker. Original lyrics also, I believe:

[Verse 1]
Here we are together
I've loved you from afar
I've stayed up dreaming all night long
One day, you would have my heart
(One day, she would have your heart)

On "Oh, When the Saints", they've added verses contemplating about death. Or maybe being on death row?

[Verse 1]
Oh, on that day they called my name
I took a breath and then I prayed
Oh, how I want to sing with the angels
When the saints do their parade

[Verse 2]
I talk to God about my heart
The devil plays some mean guitar
Oh, I would love to dance up in Heaven
When the saints go play their part

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 3]
The sky went dark, I fell apart
Fell to my knees, I cried so hard
And then I said goodbye to my children
Hoping they'd carry me far

Traditionally, the song relates to the same themes and is considered apocalyptic, and Gaga & co. played in to this more with the lyrics they added. They added a bit more story and humanity to it, in my opinion.

Then lastly on "Get Happy 2024", they added verses talking about having mental struggles, being medicated to "get happy", and her view of Joker.

[Chorus 2]
Forget your troubles, come on, get happy
You better chase all your cares away
Sing Hallelujah, come on, get happy
Get ready for the judgment day
You call the doctor, he says, "Get happy"
When your delusions are getting low
You had a drink, now you're feeling happy
I'm waiting on your afterglow
You hit your head on the roof, get happy
It's wrong, you blew, you forgot your blues
'Cause I'll be smiling, yeah, babe, I'm happy
Your inhibitions got me loose

[Chorus 3]
So many troubles, but you're so happy
You keep on dancing to find your way
You're such a marvel, come on, get happy
You're shining on your judgment day

omg thank you so much for this breakdown!!! now Good Morning makes even more sense to me as an opener! I looooove how eerie the songs are if you pay attention to the lyrics and add the context of the film.

I knooow. Happy to share it with you, because it really gave these songs entirely different vibes to me knowing which lyrics they wrote deliberately. And made me even more impressed by their work!
