How does the rolling effect work on Spotify?

The rolling effect on Spotify means they have a 28-day (kind of 1 month) window in counting "monthly listeners". Its reflected on how many active Spotify users discover/play the song.

So for example, because Gaga has a new song with Bruno Mars, and users are playing it and discovering it, Gaga keeps increasing in the follower count. This has no correlation however to the number of streams the song gets. You can play the song 20 times a day but still be counted as one because you are only one user.

So once this refreshes or the rolling window takes place, the people who are already listening to the song from the previous month will no longer be counted in the increases it will get on its 2nd month, unless newer people or Spotify users who havent played Die With A Smile, discover the song.

The thing that will help to continue Gaga's increase in monthly listeners is a new song or something to help people discover Die With A Smile, like more playlists or a public performance.

so this is very different from the rolling effect of the radio which almost guarantees a drop in listeners because they play your music less to make room for new music. The 28-day rolling effect of Spotify won't necessarily do anything if listeners continue to listen to your music. Also there is nothing magical about the first 28 days to increase monthly listeners and nothing detrimental after the first 28 days as long as listeners keep listening to your music. In essence, radio will drop your music temporarily due to the "rolling effect" and Spotify won't. Same name but very different effects.

Seems like Gaga is going to surpass Taylor even without the lead single and the Joker OST!

But the chances of an increase is low since every day that passes she has to retain the listeners from the prior month?

Yes but this is not a spotify problem. If a song is not reaching new listeners and start to decrease in listeners, it drops everywhere including spotify and other ploatforms like youtube, apple music. However, say if your song is very strong and can keep listeners interested and serves longevity, it's not like spotify is going to drop you after 28 days, the rolling effect of spotify won't do anything as long as people keep listening to your music. I think in the case of DWAS, we won't need to worry about anything, it serves longevity for sure and won't be threatened by what is so-called the rolling effect.

Hmm so the rolling effect is a 28 day thing not a 31 day thing? Can anyone elaborate on that? Because today would technically be day 29/30 .

I did some research. Please allow me to clarify how Spotify calculate the monthly listeners. Basically, for every individual who listens to any Gaga songs in the last 28 days, you are counted as 1 in the calculation of monthly listener. Spotify used 28 day as a parameter not 31 day because the number of days in each month is different and they thought a 4-week period is more fair. This is what the "rolling effect" of spotify is based on, which I think is confusing, because it really is just the result of their calculation method. Spotify is NOT dropping your music after 28 days.
