elijahfan 24,869
Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard's new film presented a few months ago at Cannes to a 9-minute standing ovation, has a release date set for the US. It will come out in select theaters on November 1st and will be available to stream on Netflix on November 13th. The movie is a musical that tells the story of disgruntled lawyer Rita who is tasked with assisting an escaped Mexican cartel leader in undergoing sex reassignment surgery to both evade the authorities and affirm her gender. The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón in the title role. It won the Jury Grand Prize at Cannes, and its four main actresses were awarded the Best Female Performance award - not only was it the first time an ensemble of performers won this prize at Cannes, but Gascón is also the first trans actress to get it, which prompted a wave of controversial political reactions. The film came out in France last week and it's honestly a modern masterpiece. It's undefinable, changes genres multiple times and makes you go through all possible emotions. It also has its camp moments (a musical number about vaginoplasty? Check), and the incredible soundtrack has numerous bops. It's like Pedro Almodóvar and Jacques Demy got together and made a film about Mexican cartels. Pretty bonkers. Songs were written by French pop singer Camille and Clément Ducol, and choreography was made by Belgian modern dance master Damien Jalet, most known on film for his work on Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria. I've already seen the film twice and wouldn't be making this thread if I didn't think this was an instant classic. Not only is this incredible filmmaking, but it's also something that I believe members here could really enjoy. So keep an eye out for its release in your respective countries Even though it's not subtitled in English, I'd also suggest taking a look at the original international trailer that I believe gives a better idea of the actual story and vibe of the film: Edited August 26 by elijahfan 2 1

I'm perchedt I hadn't seen her acting since Spring Breakers and honestly, she blew me away. The four actresses sharing the acting prize is totally justified. Selena is also singing my favorite song from the film, I've had it stuck in my mind for hours and am so frustrated the soundtrack isn't out yet. Honestly, an Oscar performance from her isn't to be ruled out. Edited August 26 by elijahfan 1

selenalavigne 1,433
I’m thinking how excited i am for this. Every day i wake up thinking how much longer till the soundtrack is out. We’ve got Kylie Minogue the 18th. Halsey and Loyal Lobos the 25th. And yes, these things, are the things that bring me joy every Thursday night up until about halfway through the week. So i find it really cool that sometimes they drop stuff earlier in the week which i think is cool. But yes, i look forward to all of the characters in this movie. This movie looks like the characters are people worth investing my time outside of when i’m watching the movie. And that’s all you can ever hope for with a musical. selenalavigne 1,433
I just know i’m gonna be obsessed and i know we have to wait 2 and a half more weeks but omg. AAAA. Selena Gomez co-starring in a musical movie in Spanish, with an artsy vibe, R Rated, with queer topics, and drug cartels, and really good songs. AND IT’S GONNA BE ON NETFLIX. AAAAAA. And then Wicked. I am taking a second to stop and acknowledge all the blessings we are about to receive and thank God to be alive. Mi Camino already sounds like a classic in my music library. I was thinking, this is the soundtrack with no Selena/Jessi, and I already have played these 5 songs through, multiple times and enjoyed them, then with those songs, and the rest, because these are just selections UGH this is gonna be good. I’ve also seen some clips. UGH. When is the whole soundtrack getting released? Edited October 22 by selenalavigne Ready to Stan LG7
