“Sympathy is a knife” isn't about TS
In May, seemingly predicting how “Sympathy is a knife” would be perceived, Charli put out a “brat psa” on TikTok warning fans that there are no “diss tracks” on the album.
She has often framed her lyrical references as a rebellion against the supposed rules of modern feminism. “It’s so complicated,” she explains in that PSA, being “a female artist, where you are pitted against your peers but also expected to be best friends with every single person constantly. If you’re not, you’re deemed a bad feminist.”
“People are gonna think what they want to think,” she tells me. “That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure and how I don’t want to be in those situations physically when I feel self-doubt.”
