bumblebee 2,528
Sorry to keep going on about this but Adele and Gaga released their first albums in the same year. Adele has sold an estimated 32 million worldwide across two albums while Gaga has sold an estimated 23 million across three. Adele has eight Grammys while Gaga has five. In the US, 21 has sold more copies than Michael Jackson's Thriller while in the UK, it has sold more than Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory. It is also the first album since Thriller to sell more than any other album in the world over two consecutive years. Add to this the fact that she will be performing at this years Academy Awards and is also very likely to walk away with her first Oscar and the questioning of her merit becomes increasingly bizarre. Of course we can't rely on sales and accolades as the only factor but if Gaga's statistics read like this and people were disputing her position on this list there would be an uproar on this very forum - rightfully so at that. Nicely said! Applause  But we also should mention radio airplay (Gaga was the most played UK radio artist in 2010 and the second most played radio artist in 2011, and on the whole has more radio hits), single sales and touring, where Gaga seems to be far ahead, I guess
gagalovesme 2
omg gaga beat so many of the greats  this is amazing, she's hardly even been in the business! in another 30 or so years she'll be no.1 on that list, just you wait and see
heavyMetalGAGA 65
Glad to see someone is finally smart enough to notice that musically Gaga can't be compared to Madonna often! Gaga is just the first prominent female figure since 80s who is using dem tools to get her name known not only because of her musical/singing talent and commercial success, but also thanks to contributions to the pop culture, messages, extravagant fashion sense and artistic bravery! So speaking simple words, in the marketing they do seem to have some strong similarities. Musically Gaga is much more influenced by Elton John, Bowie and Springsteen. But from all those legends alive, the press only constantly milks Madonna comparisons. They're both very s-xual though. That's the only similarity
maxthewonderdog 300
Awesome! And Debbie Harry is #4! Unfortunately, the #1 pick kind of makes the list questionable, in my opinion.

Silver Keith 27
This list is bull****, GaGa is top 5 material.
Galactic Mess 1,393
Britney and Mariah should be on the list instead of Adele and Amy... Adele didn't really make an impact on pop culture and Amy didn't last long enough, unfortunately.
StrawberryBlond 14,213
Clearly, the author doesn't understand what a popstar is, because most of the woman on this list are soul and rock artists. If these women were omited from the list and it was a list of actual POP artists, Gaga would be at #4. Makes me wonder if the author had focused on proper pop stars, if they would have included the likes of Katy, Rihanna, Kesha, Taylor? Well, any "greatest women in music" lists without those four on it gets a definite thumbs up from me. Kinda surprised that Mariah Carey and Pink didn't get a mention considering that The Spice Girls did.

Millennial 0
Wow. Didn't expect Gaga to be bigger than Joplin and Smith, but I'm very pleased with the list. Only, Adele and Winehouse on 8 and 7? That's a joke to me. They didn't achieve anything. Yeah I guess making truly amazing songs and getting Grammys means nothing
Wee Monster 0
Yeah I guess making truly amazing songs and getting Grammys means nothing Apparently Gaga can explore as many different genres as she likes and will still be considered "pop". Adele and Amy on the other hand made the mistake of working with someone other than RedOne on Back to Black and 21... By the majority of people in this threads standards - pop music was invented in 2008.

By the majority of people in this threads standards - pop music was invented in 2008. Oh come on, you know what I mean (even though Adele and Winehouse are both soul artists..)! They wrote amazing, chart-topping songs but when we'll actually talk about which artists were pivotal in the evolution of pop music in about 100 years or so, Adele and Winehouse will not be in the list, I'm sorry, but that's just a logical conclusion. And for the record, I think Gaga is way too high up on the list as well. Don't think I know nothing about music.
