I absolutely believe in the power of nurture over nature. It was one of my favorite topics of study in college psych; trauma and experience changing our natural behaviors. Something as minor as me being naturally extroverted but projecting introvert due to life experience or something as major as someone being born with mental abnormalities that cause behavioral differences (or even problems) which can lead to that individual being ostracized which makes them prime picking for radicalization. Mix the radicalization with their innate mental issues and boom. You have an attempted assassination. It's a story we've seen play out hundreds of times in the US, I just can't believe anyone is 100% a naturally born killer. Whimsical bitch
sarcamstic 1,603
not to sound pointed cuz i’m just spewing thoughts… but why does him being bullied matter at this point? especially given that he tried to assassinate a presidential candidate? yeah, it’s certainly *A* point to raise in all of these situations — but we’ve had this discussion time and time again with each white male mass shooter. it’s been established that killers can be created by upbringing and life experiences, but in this case, i really feel like “bullying” isn’t some umbrella explanation for him attempting to shoot & kill an ex-president. it will definitely been seen as a piece in his motivation, but unless there’s some correlation between why he was bullied and the political motivation behind it, this feels like a null point to me. time will obviously tell as more details come out… but the whole “he was bullied” thing is so tired & makes no sense with what happened yesterday. flying like 1000 birds

You could have also given the answer "As soon as I saw this kid's face I knew he played shooter games". Nobody did because we’re not in the 1990s where this embarrassing myth was yet to be thoroughly debunked by study after study… Games have nothing to do with this 😭 He was literally wearing a gun enthusiast youtubers merch when he died… aka reality is to blame

There is never any justification for shooting someone and endangering the lives of others into the bargain. I was bullied, as were many other people I know. We've never even thought about shooting up a bunch of people as a response. You have to be pre-disposed to this stuff. Any attempts at justification only make the problem worse, we need to increase mental health awareness and treatment to really make a difference. If guns can't be banned, they should at least be controlled to the highest degree. Instead of focusing on whether the shooter was bullied or not, perhaps we should focus on how growing up in a country where guns are legal, normalised, glamorised and easy to acquire helps the public to see them as no big deal and fuels a troubled mind to make rash decisions with fatal consequences. For anyone who says "guns don't kill people, people kill people," guns used to be legal in Australia, then, after one mass shooting, they banned them and they've never had a mass shooting since. Think about that. 1 hour ago, River said: I think it depends, we were all bullied somehow in high school but non of us became a murdered, the worst that we became is grumpy sarcastic gays that hates everything and everyone. Bullying plays a large part in all of this and radical thinking to begin with. Bullying and harassment alters brain chemistry and how information is processed to begin with. So somebody who is bullied, especially somebody severely bullied over a long period of time, will be more affected than somebody bullied less frequently or over a shorter period of time. There's also genetic predisposition that layers into this as well (for psychopathic tendencies, etc). And lastly, need for belonging is a proven theory at this point. A lot of people are radicalized or pushed towards a form of religion because they were pushed out of identifying with other parts of cultures and the ones they find are somehow "greeting" them. People become radicalized because somebody on the internet in these extremist groups likely talked to him and identified with him. Lots of people here talk about how Gaga saved their lives, GGD saved their lives, they got on Grindr at a young age because they were looking to identify with other gay people. He didn't have that, his equivalent was an extremist group. In no way am I dismissing a horrifying action such as his or trying to downplay, but we have to recognize what is causing these issues to fix them as a society. It's not just "he's just a monster", he was likely born into predispositions to be made into one and society finished the mold.

Learned from parents or any close contact, or friends you fell in with who exhibited such tendency. I don't think anyone was born to be bad, but learned it while growing up.
