RAMROD 117,019
Two climate activists have been arrested at Stonehenge in England after spraying orange paint on the well-known historic landmark. The group Just Stop Oil took credit for the Wednesday action, which they said was a call on the United Kingdom to stop the use of fossil fuels by 2030. “Continuing to burn coal, oil and gas will result in the death of millions. We have to come together to defend humanity or we risk everything,” Just Stop Oil said in a press release. The group said the orange cornflour used on the monument would wash away in the rain. It identified the two activists responsible as University of Oxford student Niamh Lynch, 21, and Birmingham resident Rajan Naidu, 73. The Wiltshire Police confirmed that officers arrested two people on suspicion of damaging Stonehenge. The action took place just one day before the summer solstice — the longest day of the year — when thousands of people are expected to descend upon the historic monument. English Heritage, the group that manages Stonehenge, said in a post on X that the site remains open. It called the incident “extremely upsetting” and said its curators were assessing the extent of any damage. In its press release, Just Stop Oil said it wouldn’t be enough for the UK to stop any future oil and gas licenses, but rather urged the government to sign a legally binding treaty barring it from extracting and burning oil, gas and coal by the year 2030. UK political leaders were quick to condemn the demonstration. It’s the latest public protest initiated by activists with Just Stop Oil, whose members have also interrupted tennis matches at Wimbledon, disrupted the London pride parade and defacedclassic works of art. https://www.wvtf.org/2024-06-19/2-climate-activists-were-arrested-after-spraying-orange-paint-on-stonehenge?_amp=true (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ ᶠʳᵒⁿᵗ ᵗᵒʷᵃʳᵈ ᵉⁿᵉᵐʸ (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡

Guest
You can protest without vandalizing one of the ancient wonders of the world. Hope they have a lot of jail time.

AsleepOnTheCeiling 6,951
These people do not understand the cause they claim to be fighting for if this is what they're doing.

Considering the fact that vandalism is considered a felony in most parts of the world, I would assume most people here understand that there are consequences to vandalism regardless of if someone is using corn starch, or spray paint, or sharpie markers and agree with said consequences and take it pretty seriously. Especially when considering the fact that this is Stonehenge and not some underpass on a highway.
Roughhouse Dandy 13,608
They're annoying, but the cornstarch is not a big deal at all. Not even worth the title of vandalism imo This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.
Karl 3,575
Everyone I know in the UK is completely over this group, kids of rich parents lying down on the road stopping ambulances and people trying to do their day jobs is not the vibe to get the message across. Especially when considering the fact that this is Stonehenge and not some underpass on a highway. Stonehenge is next to a highway that's most likely doing more damage to it than these 'vandals' ever could. Tories also wanted to build an underpass under Stonehenge (not an underpass, but it's more poetic this way). I'm not buying any of this. I've been in a creative field for too long and the most common thing I've seen is how the general public will treat those who are building culture currently like sh*t while fetishizing stuff built by people who are long gone. I don't see any of it as genuine anymore - bulldoze the rocks for all I care. It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
