Tennesse Passes Laws Sentencing Death Penalty For Child Rapists. Effective Next Week

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has approved legislation allowing the death penalty in child rape convictions, a change the Republican-controlled Statehouse championed amid concerns that the U.S. Supreme Court has banned capital punishment in such cases.

Lee, a Republican, quietly signed off on the legislation in May without issuing a statement.

The new Tennessee law, which goes into effect July 1, authorizes the state to pursue capital punishment when an adult is convicted of aggravated rape of a child. Those convicted could be sentenced to death, imprisonment for life without possibility of parole, or imprisonment for life.

Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis enacted a similar bill nearly a year ago. A few months after being enacted, Florida prosecutors in Lake County announced in December that they were pursuing the death penalty for a man accused of committing sexual battery of a minor under the age of twelve. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the case is considered the first to be pursued under the new law.

Meanwhile, Idaho’s GOP-controlled House approved similar legislation earlier this year, but the proposal eventually stalled in the similarly Republican-dominated Senate.

The act of rape, especially to that of a child, is a monstrous one, but the death penalty is just as disgusting. We're becoming more and more draconian. It is barbaric. Isn't the *correctional* system supposed to be rehabilitative?

Meh. Death penalty is like letting them get away with the horrible things they did. They should spend their entire life in prison.

If we had an infallible justice system, I could understand the argument for the death penalty, though I'd still disagree because it let's the assailant out of punishment too easily. Our justice system is highly corrupt, however, and police willfully provide false testimony and evidence to convict people of crimes they didn't commit. So long as there is corruption in our system, the death penalty will be used to scapegoat innocent people and permanently silence them. And it's the taxpayers funding these executions, meaning we the people are committing murder against innocent people.

They better be real careful who they kill. Lots of innocent ppl get accused of things they didn’t do. 
Lots of innocent ppl can get released from jail, but no innocent ppl can get their life back

Honestly the death penalty only ever appeases those who don't have to experience the court system as a result of themselves or a loved one being the victim of a death penalty worthy crime. 

Ignoring all the valid points about the morality of it against the criminal and the fact that innocents do get found guilty due to failings. 

No death row inmate gets executed quickly. It is a drawn out, years or even decades long process of litigation post-verdict. A process that prevents survivors being given the right to move on, their abuse is relitigated again and again without closure. I often wonder if proponents of the death penalty even care about the original victims, because if they did they wouldn't elongate the ordeal.

There would be those who argue that anyone who decides to rape a child is not worthy of redemption. Not saying that is my view but you can understand why the law would appeal to some people, especially the hard nosed right wingers 

States like Florida and Tennessee passing increasingly draconian laws sets a dangerous precedent though and you have to wonder at what point such behavior would end. Figures like Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are illustrations of how far autoritarian the republican party has gone and a reminder that all of us need to vote against this menace come election time

I for sure see how people can come to the conclusion. Being subjected to certain people's awful acts has made me draw some lines in the sand concerning who I'm personally capable of having individual sympathy for; it just strikes me as hypocritical seeing states that tout a "pro-life" and "small government" stance also rally for the government to legally murder more people. 

To take it a step further, it also concerns me how they're sanctioning more ways for the government to kill people while trying to draw a connection between LGBTQIA+ people existing and predatory behavior. Especially if Project 2025 goes forward: how much closer does this put us to them being able to call a drag queen who experiences an accidental latex nip slip while performing at an all ages outdoor brunch a child predator and seeking capital punishment? The scenario sounded like a crazy reach a few years ago, but now? Not so much imo

I’m all for punishing evil people (especially child r*pists) BUT killing someone is pretty evil too. Can’t believe there’s people who genuinely like killing criminals.
