New data released shows Canada which is already behind Europe and most of the developed world on EV transition is falling even further behind as consumer interest in EVs wane

New released data suggests only 11% of car owners are interested in buying an EV leaving the other 89% as either not interested or unsure

The top cited reason is that EVs still remain more expensive and anxiety over lack of charging infrastruture remains a concern

Canadas 2nd Largest Province (Quebec) and 3rd Largest (British Columbia) however are leading the Country with 40% and 33% interested as the Provinces subsities and infrastructure development has been more robust than in the rest of the Country

In Canadas most populated province (Ontario) those who say they are interested in an EV as their next car according to last poll was only 9%

Honestly, people probably can’t afford a new vehicle. Isn’t housing ridiculously expensive in Canada?

Well of course they can't, they don't have cheap Chinese EVs, government doesn't allow it.

It is insane. But it also depends which side of the coin ur in. Its important to remember not everyones finances is affected by the housing crisis

Anyone that bought real estate at least 10 years ago is probably doing fine. Especially if they chose to rent out part of it and collect a lot of money. Its worth noting nearly 2/3 of adults in Canada are home owners. Its the remaining 1/3 of renters (or the portion of home owners that bought in more recent years) that is most vulnerable. Even those some have room mates and stuff to split rent with

Theres also a high chunck of the population that stays living with their parents until their 30s because of expensive housing. They tend to have disposable income too because they arent paying the exuberant rents theyd be forced to pay if they moved out

So financial sitiations still vary a lot from person to person and not everyone is in financial ruin which may explain why the consumer is more resilient than expected. The generalization of housing crisis affecting consumer simply doesnt apply to everyone. Many are indeed struggling, many people A LOT.

But I guarantee you more than just 11% are well off... And BC which is the most expensive Province has the 2nd highest EV adoption rate

The lack of infrastructure and economic incentive is just detering a lot of people in most Provinces I think. More than 11% could afford one if they really wanted to but they probably dont see it as worth it or advantageous

This makes a lot of sense, thank you for taking the time to explain. :holdmyhand:

We considered an EV for our next car but ultimately decided against it because we like to do road trips sometimes and we weren’t satisfied with the charging station situation. That was the main inhibitor for us.

I don't think it's that they aren't interested in having an EV. They're not interested in buying a new vehicle period, electric or otherwise :laughga:

I live in a 3rd world country and got a loan for a hybrid, the best investment I've ever made in my life. I love my Honda Fit.

We don't have the infrastructure nor the money for full EVs in the rest of my country except the capitol so they're not worth getting for the middle/low class. And there are not enough car workshops that know how to work with EVs either, the pieces are expensive too.

My country loves to emulate every bad decision from the US and like them, here they want to give the petrol industry more money, so investing in EVs is not a priority.

english is not my native language >.<

You gotta get the infrastructure ready before you plan thes things. And give incentives for ev cars so people can get it cheaper, if canada haven't do that programme already. :bradley:

Well the poll was about their "next car". It didnt mean they had to be interested in buying a new one now

Plus I can believe these numbers. Very few ppl i know are excited about EVs for said reason. Our Province is way under prepared for transition. If u dont own ur own house with a garage ur kinda screwed and are gonna be inconvinienced big time

Same. I bought my car brand new in 2021 and at the time i considered it but ultimately decided against it

Since i do not own my own house and do not know where ill end up next, i have no guarantees of access to a garage to charge overnight. Id have to rely on the almost non existant infrastructure to charge it

Driving several KM to the nearest charge station after work and wait 30 to 60 min for it to charge did not seem feasable. Id get annoyed and resent the car in no time

Federally the Governement gives $5000. Provinces add whatever they wish. Ontario used to have a rebate as well and ended it making the $5000 alone no longer enough to convince people

Quebec and British Columbia have had consistent rebates that add to the federal one so not surprised those 2 are more ahead

And again infrustructure too. Even if u can afford it, some are reluctant too when the cities arent prepared to service a fleet properly
