Does People Really Want New Original Movies?

Like, there are always those people who complain about sequels, prequels, and worst, reboots. And complain how nothing is original anymore, or only about big IPs like MCU super heroes, Bond series, Godzilla, etc.

Which is simply isn't true? There are original movies being released. But it doesn't seem to sell very well. 

Latest example includes The Fall Guy, which is a fun and original scripted movie. But yet performs poorly on box office that it will release on digital platforms this week, just lest than 2 weeks after its initial release. The Fall Guy flopped at the box office during its opening weekend, earning just $28.5 million domestically. So far, the movie has earned back around half its budget, suggesting The Fall Guy isn't on course to profit.

Moreover, Ant-Man: Quantumania, one if the floppiest gross MCU movies that was released last year, (2023), are still outgrossed many movies released this year (2024)! Ant-Man: Quantumania grossed $476.1 million worldwide, with $214.5 million in the United States and Canada, and $261.6 million in other territories

 

Meanwhile, one of the most awaited sequel this year already tracking high from tickets presales

 

As ever, Hollywood, the biggest movie industry in the world, are mostly believe and responded in form of profits. It is business after all. They won't sell what's not profitable or even mixed results. So if you want more diversity, racial & genders, and more original contents, then wouldn't it be very necessary that people as costumers need to start to put money where the mouth is?

honestly, the problem is the writers, they are lacking of originality, they are recycling plot points and twist, the dialogues are cringe af..

No, most people want very familiar retreads of known brands. Box office bears this out.

Simultaneously, people want to think of themselves as novel and interesting. So, they bemoan a lack of originality. 

Yet they do not seek out original movies. They do not even care to know what exists. 

They want both contradictory things at once. A belief they are novel and original, while actually patronizing only the things they claim to hate. 

I love movies. I see a mix of everything, but try to prioritize original scripts. I wish for more of the exciting movies I see on a regular basis to find mass audiences. Sadly, people seem immune save for the occasional breakthrough film, or brand directors such as Nolan and Peele.

Also, I dare everyone who replies to this to provide a list of the non-IP, sequel, or reboot films they have paid to see in a theater in the last 30 days. If people are going to bemoan a lack of originality, I want to see your credentials.

I like to see and try to support original movies; if I watch them or not at the cinema will depend on multiple factors like the quality of the movie, the plot, if it actually makes it to my local movie theater, etc. 

I don't know if the current issue is that they don't know how to properly promote a movie anymore, if it's the short run times or if people simply don't care in general. In many cases I have asked friends about a movie and they forget that the movie is out and once they want to see it there's only a few showings left or it's already out of the movie theater. 

In my city for example, for the last couple of months, most of the new movies (even the big ones) aren't being shown in its original language (they're dubbed). Due to this, I decide to skip them. And this isn't even a commercial choice, as those runs aren't exactly selling more. I remember we used to have so many showings a couple years before. 

I'm not against reboots, remakes or sequels but it's annoying to see those movies getting the most showings and leaving out other options. I've been wanting to go to the movies for a bit now and almost all of the movies are bad. There's nothing good to watch. It's also super annoying to see a thousand of horror movies out every week. They should only release them during Halloween.

Fact is that the public is, for the most part, scared to buy into an original movie for fear that it's going to be terrible then they wasted 2 hours of their life and wasted money for overpriced tickets and refreshments. They'd rather go to see a formula that they already like so they know it'll be decent at least. And production companies are afraid of upsetting this balance because its worked for far too long and don't fix what ain't broken, right?

I also think it's a promotional issue. I don't see movies advertised anywhere near as much as they used to, even major ones. If there was a major movie out, I used to be aware of it as it was blasted everywhere in the media, without me even seeking it out. Now I look at the list of the highest grossing movies right now and am like "They've made a new Ghostbusters?," "Another Plant of the Apes movie?" "A 4th Kung Fu Panda?" This stuff used to something I was aware of pre-release for months beforehand back in the day. Now it's known to the fans and that's it. Last year was the same, I didn't even know that there were new Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible movies coming out until a few weeks before. The effort just isn't being put in to make us care.

Most sequels and reboots suck so if I go to the theater (which is rare AF anyway because it's so expensive) it's typically a new horror/thriller or drama.

I'm SO SO SO tired of sequels and remakes and reboots.
