Slovak-Prime-Minister-Robert-Fico-shot-a

Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and wounded in an apparent assassination attempt Wednesday as he made an appearance outside a community center, local media reported.

Fico was airlifted to a nearby hospital. His official Facebook page said he was "shot multiple times and is currently in a life-threatening condition." Slovak broadcaster TA3 said Fico, 59, was shot in the abdomen after a meeting in the town of Handlová, about 100 miles (161 km) northeast of the capital Bratislava, in central Slovakia.

Slovakia’s acting parliament president, Peter Žiga, said “I perceive this as an attack on the principles of Slovak democracy,” Reuters reported.

“Such a horrible act has never happened in Slovak history. I consider it to be the result of whipped-up passions and the division of the Slovak society into two irreconcilable camps,” he added.

Slovakia has experienced several incidents of serious violence over the past few years. In 2022, two people were killed in a shooting outside an LGBT venue in Bratislava. In 2018, investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová were shot dead in their home.

.

Born into a working-class family on 15 September 1964, Fico – a lawyer by profession – began his political career with the Communist party shortly before the 1989 Velvet Revolution that led to the breakup of former Czechoslovakia.

He set up his centre-left Smer-SD party in 1999 after being turned down for a ministerial post by the Democratic Left, the Communists’ political heirs.

Embroiled in allegations of corruption he has always denied, Fico is brash and outspoken, with a penchant for bodybuilding, football and fast cars.

Fico admires both Vladimir Putin, saying he would not permit the Russian president’s arrest under an international warrant if he came to Slovakia, and Hungary’s illiberal leader, Viktor Orbán, “who defends the interests of his country and his people”.

The Smer leader is also a tactician: in a three-decade career, he has navigated successfully between mainstream, pro-EU positions and a fiercely nationalist, anti-western rhetoric destined mainly for domestic consumption, proving more than willing to change tack depending on public opinion or political reality.

Fico’s critics have raised concerns over the past months that he is taking a more Russia-friendly approach to foreign policy.

Im never gonna outright wish anyone dead (unless they were Adolf Hitler level evil & genocidal)...

But i gotta admit, a part of me is lowkey in favour of him getting shot for the greater good of millions. Not gonna outright wish it but just sayin

You shouldn’t, not because it’s bad but because it’s causing a bigger mess, also the right (at least Hungary’s f.cking prime minister orbán) is using this in the campaign saying the shooter was a liberal leftist… so we are not a step further

I mean that could be applied to a good amount of people, but you may be thinking of Viktor Orbán in Hungary.

Yeah, I saw that right away one of the other people in the government was saying this and that it was the fault of the media :saladga: But now that we know the guy's name and that he used to be in this pro-Putin pseudo-military group I'm not sure. From what I read, he was in that group, it got disbanded, he (seemingly?) became more liberal, and now he does this.

Pennywise

Maybe the days where politicians were afraid of things like this, are coming back? Idk I wouldn’t be too opposed to it, let’s just say that.

So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

It also happened with Shinzo Abe in 2022 because the shooter was upset Abe was in a cult that was financially bankrupting the shooter's mother. It did result in Japan tightening down on political affiliations with that cult, so... :artdoll2:

They should really re-learn that they are public servants. Americans are really horrible at this, as they worship politicians for some reason.

It's not really the american playbook. It's the fascist playbook. It's just being used in a lot of places these days.
