Spain prosecutors seek to close Shakira second tax fraud case

Spanish prosecutors on Wednesday moved to dismiss a tax fraud case against Shakira just months after opening proceedings against the Colombian singer over unpaid taxes of 6.6 million euros.

It will be up to the investigating judge to decide whether to continue with the probe, and possibly recommend that the case be tried, or dismissed.

"The Barcelona provincial prosecutor's office for economic crimes has requested that the proceedings against Shakira be closed ... for the 2018 tax year," the prosecutors office said in a statement.

Prosecutors opened the case in July, accusing the so-called Queen of Latin Pop of using a network of companies, some of them based in tax havens, to cheat the tax office out of 6.6 million euros in 2018.

Barcelona prosecutors said that she failed to declare millions in advance payments for her El Dorado World Tour, among other payments. 
She has been accused of deducting millions in expenses from her companies, some of her expenses were duplicated and other were payments of an "eminently personal" nature. Among those personal expenses that the Prosecutor's Office considered non-deductible were private trips by private jet, as well as plane tickets for her two children and their teacher.
Shakira also collected part of the income she received from the transfer of her musical rights through a company incorporated in Luxembourg to benefited from a very reduced taxation— 1.39%. This Luxembourg company was a company registered solely for tax purposes. 
The complaint mentioned also another 17 shell companies based in Netherlands, Malta, British Virgin Islands, Panama, Bahamas, Miami, New York or Liechtenstein involved in the tax evasion.
Shakira was also accused of defrauding the state of 774k euros in wealth tax.

A month later, the singer paid 6.6 million euros to settle the debt.

In November, the singer reached a last-minute settlement with prosecutors to avoid trial in another tax fraud case involving income she earned between 2012 and 2014.
