Did you expect Taylor’s level of success for Gaga back then?

I did expect a very different route for her career going into ARTPOP, but quickly got a lession in how pop culture works. I remember being very confused and frustrated on how quick the GP can change and how mean fans can be. I'm still confused on how mean fans can be.

Taylor's arc has never been seen before. Her original peak was 1989. Huge album. Imperial phase. All that jazz.

Then she did the normal thing that happens after a once in a lifetime peak: She ebbed back to the middle with Reputation and Lover. Both big albums for sure. But not 1989 big.

But then she not only re-peaked with Folkmore, Evermore, her Taylor versions, and Midnights, she's seemingly surpassed all her past peak eras, including 1989, with Poets.

Not even Madonna did this - who did have two very successful albums (Ray of Light and Confessions) after she'd ebbed away from her imperial phase. But neither of those albums were BIGGER than True Blue or Like a Prayer.

It's truly bizarre. And no one could have seen this coming after Lover. I know I didn't.

That being said, I never thought Gaga would keep her TFM influence/peak because no pop star ever does or ever has. Except now Taylor.

It is way too early to say that TTPD is bigger than 1989. The success of the first few weeks is always due to pure hype built on previous releases. Whether the album will be successful is something to be determined in a few months, not now

Very good point. It might sink like a stone for sure.

But she is the talk of the world. She is in her second imperial phase no doubt right now. And has been for years now.

I am not a Swiftie, but don't hate her either. I find her music pretty good at best, boring at worst, but mostly meh. So I have no dog in the fight. If that matters.

You can’t have everything - I think both took both conscious decisions to grow in the ways that each have - and I think they achieved what they wanted.

Gaga innately has grit. She went all out on LGBT because the strong connection made sense to her. She went political, religious references. Shock and avant garde. There was then a decision to shift more to grow and demonstrate her versatility. That powerful voice, jazz, films etc.

Taylor saw an opportunity in country to pop transition. She evolved during Red - 1989 time. She targeted the mass

Later, she saw and found a passion in appreciating what Lana was doing, collaborating and referencing clearly, built this into her sound - which transitioned pop into more mellow dreamy tones, compared to prev. Katy Perry firework times. She saw this opportunity to make this vibe cool and for the mass, to target her songs into cafes, urban outfitters etc etc. As she keeps going she grows her market, as all what she did previously still appeals to a new expanded market, in fact she rereleases (!) to re-own her music and bring everything across into 2024.. She works with producers which want her to deliver catchy music which will be in stores, cafes etc. she loves story telling… it just keeps coming, and I think will only stop when the next generation makes equally as smart moves

both just took different paths to capitalise on their strengths and interests…. If Gaga took a path of pumping out catchy songs for the mass, with no grit and no history of being a shocker or lgbt trailblazer… well frankly a lot of us would not even be on this site as that would not be ‘special’ to us….

Ahm sorry but I was 16 when the fame dropped and Gaga got even bigger than Taylor could never... She was EVERYWHERE, not just big in USA but average at other countries like Miss Swift. Gaga was huge during TFM and BTW, just remember she had her first big stadium concerts in Mexico during that time.

Call me biased but I don't even compare Gaga to Taylor. Gaga's achieved SO much in her career, and in so many different areas. I'm convinced her legacy will live on much longer than any of the other pop stars of her generation really. At least you know when she puts out another album it's gonna be different to the previous one, which is more than you can say for others... :iamfair:

I absolutely agree that right now she is at her peak, even bigger than 1989. Just saying that we cannot really claim that this album's era is her biggest. Her current peak is driven by the previous 4 or 5 releases (lost count of how many album she has released since 2022 tbh) and the extremelly good marketing and public reception to her Eras tour! Whether this era will be her biggest remains to be seen (might very well be, we just haven't got enough information to judge it by now).

Gaga's status back in 2009-2010 was much bigger than Taylor's right now. She was a universal icon that you either loved or loved to hate. She was a cultural reset. She was a guilty pleasure whenever she performed, everybody knew about her, but they didn't know how she looked like. Gaga changed the rules about the celebrity/superstar. I don't follow Taylor, but no. IMHO her level of success is achieved by playing it safe for way too long and grabbing money by manipulating her fans and selling out her personal life. No statement, no art, no pioneering.

I honestly didn't expect something repetitive like Swift would be this successful

Only the STAR IS BORN Gaga could have been that level of success cause of the GP taste. And if you ask me i prefer the dark edgy TFM n BTW Gaga even if shes for a way smaller audience

it is pretty crazy that she repeaked after 1989 almost tenfold lol

that's like if Gags was suddenly at BTW levels of intrigue - which she might be with Joker but in a different way

Absolutely not. I don’t think Gaga’s success needs to be compared to others - she is in a league of her as far as her talent & artistry go.

Re: Taylor, she has ultimate universal appeal (and there’s nothing wrong with that). Brilliant marketing, brilliant pop star though I don’t personally love her music. Her management / marketing team do their jobs properly as well.

I think Gaga realized she doesn’t want that level of success.
