A Lady Gaga Google Search shows how AI is upending the world's most profitable online business. 'Site owners are terrified.'

Well, sort of..

Generative AI is bringing some of the biggest ever changes to Google Search. Business Insider tracked Google's new experimental feature called Search Generative Experience. They used a Lady Gaga query to evaluate the impact of AI on Google searches and they track the SGE s progress. Google searches might affect the way site owners get their visits, profits, etc. in the future if this gets implemented. 

 

Any limitation or sidelining of links to third parties in favor of Google AI summaries is likely to upend digital business models that rely on traffic from the company. Adweek recently reported that web publishers could face annual ad revenue losses of up to $2 billion as a result of SGE.

"This will force companies to rethink their marketing channels strategy as GenAI becomes more embedded across all aspects of search," Alan Antin, a vice president analyst at Gartner, told BI.

 

Google's bigger problem may be users moving to other platforms for information, such as AI voice assistants, or chatbots from OpenAI. ChatGPT is already able to search the internet using Bing, the search engine from Microsoft.

"That's where some of this risk could really emerge," Shmulik said. "Not to say Google doesn't have a horse in the race, but I think now the playing field becomes a little bit more open."

Yeah, it’s replaced google for me tbh. I always get the exact answer I’m looking for with GPT.

With google, usually I have to add the word “Reddit” to my search and hope to god some random person had my exact same issue at some point.

Idk exactly what this means but I will say Google's search results have been becoming worse and worse over the past few years. Since they allowed sponsored results (ads) and the internet became overcluttered with information it's been so hard to find something specific. That's why everyone adds 'reddit' onto their searches these days to find information. Even the Google Images photo search has changed for the worst. I used to be able to, for example, drop a Gaga pic in there and have the same pic returned in all different sizes and qualities. But now it's more like advertising products and websites. I can totally understand why people would move to AI search engines to actually get specific results. Google has enough money to implement AI so they have no excuse if they start falling behind
