If it was on purpose, I think whoever did it wouldn't have chosen 1 AM as the time to do it. Rush hour around 8-9 AM or 5-6 PM would've led to more casualties. I think it was accidental. Perhaps a captain with little experience or was somehow drunk or high... not sure but it doesn't seem orchestrated to me.

 

I was talking with my coworker today and his brother is a cargo ship captain who has passed under that bridge numerous times. According to his brother (allegedly) to make the turn up to the bridge, you have to start trajectory about 3 miles out. Most likely, the captain was being dumb and not paying full attention to their job.

Just be careful, all that water slamming into the car could be really painful, with or without airbag. The window might slow down some of that force

Haven't read all the way through this thread, but I feel like the easiest way to get out of a sinking car would be to open the window fully, let the car fully fill up, then unbuckle right as the water reaches your head, take a deep breath, then hold onto the outside upper edge of the door frame, use your upper body strength to pull yourself out and then swim directly upwards, right?

Well, having the window totally open could also cause a massive rush of water giving you less time to take a breath and think about your next action in a situation where you'd already be panicking

Unless you're falling from a great height/a bridge/etc, then keeping window up a bit might slow force of water coming at you? while still letting car fill up

My thought, and I could be completely wrong, is that if you just let the window open a crack, or even half way, the glass will shatter and perhaps could result in cuts and even more severe injury to critical areas like the eyes.

And yeah, time for me to go on a google deep dive about car sinking survival skills.

Actually it would be a good idea to also have this tool that cracks windows open easily in the car …  they have these in busses (I used to have one in my car I think )

There's not toooo much difference between fighting the flooding water to get out of the window or to open the door

Source: my home town is 3 feet above sea level and half my state is water
