The parents of a badly neglected Louisiana woman found “melted” into a maggot-infested couch were each sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday after pleading no contest to manslaughter last month.

Sheila and Clay Fletcher, of East Feliciana, were arrested in January 2022 after their 36-year-old daughter, Lacey Fletcher, was discovered dead in a fetid crater in the family’s sofa, covered by urine and feces.

Lacey, who vanished from public view in 2002 when she was roughly 16, had not moved from the spot for 12 years and weighed only 96lbs when she was found, prosecutors said.

A stunned local medical examiner concluded that she died from acute neglect — and said he remains traumatized by the case two years later.

“I have seen every kind of death and dead body in all my years of this work, but I’ve never seen anything like what happened to Lacey,” Ewell Bickham told The Post last month.

Lacey had become ‘fused’ to the couch through her rotted skin and when she was found her bones were protuding from her body, according to the coroner.

“We respect the judge’s decision. If you had a horse that was in the stall behind your house, and you go back there and the flesh is just gone from its body, and you can see bones exposed… You wouldn’t even treat your animal like that,” West Feliciana District Attorney Sam D’Aquilla todl The Post following the sentencing.

The Fletchers insisted on their innocence, asserting that Lacey was of “sound mind” while suffering from a severe case of Asperger’s Syndrome and social anxiety that first flared in her youth.

They deserve life in prison. Sick people out there. Also, why would you just leave the dead body rotting in your house? They must be mentally disturbed

What in the Resident Evil 7 is that? :koons:

Neglect doesn't even begin to describe what that was, 20 years in jail is far too generous.

Time. It will not wait, no matter how hard you hold on...

Sickening. 20 years in prison is far too generous of a punishment for the suffering they put their own daughter through.

...what? I have so many questions :saladga:

How did she die?
Why did they leave her here all this time?
How did they manage to live around a rotten body like this? Didn't the smell bother them?
Did no one worry about her disappearance?
Didn't they have anyone over at any point? Didn't it seem suspicious that they wouldn't let anyone come in?

Lacey tragically died due to tortuous neglect, which led to severe starvation, bone infections, and ultimately sepsis. Her psychopathic parents left her on the couch after her mental health declined, rendering her unable to leave the house. Despite having the financial means to get her medical help, they didn’t, and claimed that she had the capacity to make decisions for herself and chose to stay on the couch. It’s theorized that they grew desensitized to the smell over time or took measures to mask it. People with frontal cortex damage/psychopathy can adapt very easily to persistent odors, especially if they are the ones causing them. It appears that no one intervened or raised concerns about Lacey's disappearance until her death was discovered. She was home-bound and entirely isolated from public view for 12 entire years. Only once did a neighbor inquire about her and in response her father abruptly said, “Lacey’s still here. She’s fine.” It seems her parents made it their priority to keep visitors away and provided excuses to prevent anyone from entering their home.

Spoiler

I have many theories about this couple and why they did what they did, each one of them darker than the next. I’m currently collaborating on a forensic psychological thesis for Louisiana State University which will hopefully provide professionals with a comprehensive insight into their behavior and motives.

If you want to research deeper into the case, I have to warn you that it is dark and hard to read.
The coroner couldn't eat for a week after witnessing her body and the police said she was in a crater, fused to the couch. View images of the crime scene at your own risk.
