Many fans aren’t ready to give Joanne its flowers until Gaga gets another TFM/Born This Way level smash. They’re always hoping for a commercial “course correction” so that it doesn’t feel like every new album has diminishing returns. Until then, Joanne will always be blamed for not resurrecting her pop influence after ARTPOP destroyed it. What it SHOULD be remembered for is being the lovable, earnest yang to AP’s obnoxious but ambitious yin, the album that graduated Gaga from pop fad into pop artist. I 100% believe a future Gaga album will be a big commercial hit, and that’s when we’ll see people finally start to appreciate Joanne’s spot in her discography.
