But Small Talk was never meant to be part of an album if I remember correctly... I think this is messier than Katy's 2019-2020 release schedule

I always remember it as part of Katy Perry's "trying to make **** stick" era so I might be wrong, but given how messy the roll out for Smile was who actually knows

I don’t think she is being forced to scrap the album and start over.

King of the Fall

She is treading on very dangerous ground if she is back in the studio just because her label wants a hit. That is never a good creative mindset for an artist to have.

How would this work? Would Houdini and Training Season just become standalone singles and not feature on her next album?

Selena Gomez does it  :vegas:

They're actually doing this. I thought her album was done, there's no going back regardless of singles performances. If this is so, it's going to throw plans for the entire era off-track. Her management may have booked tour venues that they might have to quietly cancel now (just as well they weren't announced pre-album if that's the case). Make no mistake, they were confident it would be another hit era for her, piggybacking off the last successful one. Guaranteed if these songs had been taking off, the album's details would have been released last month, if not earlier. I wish more labels would just embrace the reality that one of their artists is going to have a flop era. The solution is to just let it happen, pull the plug on future singles and promo and just do a small tour for the fans, quickly move on, and then get right back into the studio and record something new, maybe release it 1-2 years later. But re-working existing albums that were otherwise completed is a fool's errand. It rarely works out. It's not fair on fans to never know what the original concept of it was and if the new changes don't work out, then it was all for nothing anyway. No wonder everyone in this photo looks crestfallen. They've just put their all into making a new album and are then told it's not good enough and to make it something more mainstream. Which is all the more of a tall order when they think what they produced was mainstream, that was the whole point - to make hits. When what you thought had all the ingredients of a bonafide smash but isn't, where do you go from there?

I think it was not the right timing, FN era was over since a year and she already had a new hit (barbie song). They should have waited longer before a new release. There is a very famous sentence that I think is real: "to last longer you need to know how to disappear" and in this case they didn't apply it. Houdini and especially Tranning season didn't resonate with people, because it was too soon, and it was not groundbreaking, it felt like another typical Dua song. Dua should have taken another year break, where she rests, truly prepare for a new album, and let people forget a bit about her, so that in 2025, she announces a new album and people are curious about her. I love Dua, I think she's a boss and a wonderful woman, I hope she'll be successful again, but they didn't need to rush so far and to try to manufacture her that much :holdmyhand:

Whaa?  No way.  That would be 5 years between album releases.  4 years is long enough.  I'd say maybe she could've waited a couple additional months for DTN to die down, but these songs underperforming isn't really a timing issue.  The songs aren't resonating with people.  Sometimes it's that simple.
